Receive emails on your cell phone via text messaging
Although I'm a big proponent of NOT staying in touch while on vacation, I understand why this is just not possible for most people. And that's why a stream of new products and software are constantly hitting the marketplace to help people communicate no matter how far the distance or how limiting the technology.
One of the more simple yet brilliant programs I've recently learned about (thanks to Vani Rangachar of the Los Angeles Times) is called Teleflip. This free service plucks emails from your email account and sends them via text messaging to your cell phone. This is perfect for those of you who haven't yet purchased one of those pricey smart phones. In fact, this is out-smarting the smart phones by providing one of the same basic services for free.
The only problem, however, is that it's currently only available in the United States.

Gmail users can use the Gmail Mobile application. It should work on most relatively modern Java-capable phones, smart or not.

I use Touch-Commander.com which provides sliding "one touch" access to phone calls, emails, SMS messages, calendar functions, pictures, music, videos and other applications and commonly used content.
Touch Commander is much the same as the finger touch scrolling, browsing, and spinning of a three dimensional interface by the finger, that is found on the Apple iPhone and the TouchPhone by HTC.
