Cahill, AFAIK, is the dean of travel writers. He wrote a piece about trekking Death Valley 20 years ago or so for Rolling Stone; they included it in one of their "best of" books, and the account was so gripping that it was at that point I became interested in travel writing and a great fan of Cahill. Can't find the article online, unfortunately. Maybe if you have lexus-nexus access.
Another great piece of wisdom I read from Cahill for aspiring travel writers: they key to success is to remember that travel writing is about the writing, not the travel.
