I brought back half a case (6 bottles) from Germany after working on a Winery there from 2004-2005. I managed to carry it on the whole way home without any questions! They didn't even make me pay custom fees in Canada on my way back, or when I finally entered the U.S. I think it helped that I told them truthfully that it was all a gift from my vino boss.
