Ride to Live, Live to Drink Wine
There are only a few things better than firing up the Harley Heritage Softtail (with a Springer front fork, rented this weekend) and heading out for a motorcycle ride through Napa and Sonoma Counties in now-sunny California, where I happen to be right now. It's the middle of the wine harvest, most of the tourists are gone, and the weather is perfect, so the locals head out to see the harvest in action. Although Napa only produces 4% of California's wine by volume (according to the Napa Farm Bureau), it's definitely the heart of the wine industry here, and accounts for 27% of it's wine sales volume. The trees are just starting to turn and you can smell the sweet smell of grapes in the sun. Just don't get squashed by the massive trucks hurtling by, carrying juicy grapes.

I was in Napa and Sonoma this past Thursday and you're right, this is such a nice time of year to visit. Unlike you, I arrived on a big bus, so I can't speak to the lack of tourists during crush season, but it was a wonderful day nonetheless. Sunny. Very low humidity. And like you said, even though it feels like summer, some of the vines are starting to change colors (orange and red) for fall.

One thing better is firing up a Screaming Eagle HD Road King and heading down the Silverado trail during this time of year. The smell of the harvest is in the air as is the early crispness of fall. The fall commences the excitement of the football season and the beginning of the final seasons of the year. For those of us that can experience the closeness of our surroundings by enjoying them on a motorcycle; there is indeed a great treat enstore.
