Bizarre Foods From Around The World
What constitutes typical North American food these days is kind of gross, if you ask me. I'm talking about all the processed junk we put in our bodies. But compared to some other 'regional' cuisines that are mentioned in this article, I guess we're pretty lucky. Need examples?- In Iceland, for instance, Hakarl is made of putrefied shark meat. Sheep's head (served in its entirety) is also popular.
- In Saudi Arabia, camels are a popular item -- camel's feet and sour camel humps in particular.
- Fried grasshoppers, earthworms and locusts are all the rage in Africa.

All of this is nothing new, I've been exposed to such things as "Mountain Oysters", "Bulls Balls", "Marinated Vulva", "Lambs Eyes in white sauce" and also "Dog Tacos and Dogs Head" I guess people will eat anything if they can make it taste good, but yuck something just goes against my stomach with these unconventional foods.

In Thailand, every market has its bug vendors. it's not garbage food. they are really tasty and except for wings and legs, very much like eating popcorn or potato chips. some are soft and gooey and some are crunchy.
seems to me most americans need to widen there horizons and get off the stump. for thousands of years asian cultures have embraced food not available at our local supermarkets. doesn't make it wrong, just different. If you graze a little farthur down the food chain, consider it brain food.

How many times did you beg your editor to let you use "Camel Toes" in the headline?

Boiled sheep heads in Kazakhstan. Lop off one ear for the host, the eye hopefully for a young boy (because it was really chewy & tough to choke down for a western man but the boys lined up eagerly for it - ceremonial not due to hunger). Nose and tongue could be passed around. Have plenty of good Kazakh vodka handy to wash it all down.

Mongolian cuisine! Aureg. . .which can be camel's milk, yak milk, or horse milk. . .fermented, or better yet when they distill the aureg into vodka, camel milk vodka is "unique." Also had sheep's head, the eyeballs were great, goat innards, dried milk curds (think of the curds in a milk carton that has been in your fridge for two months). The worst, sour reindeer milk with curds floating in it. The best, roasted marmot, too long to explain how it is cooked but that is a great part of the experience.

DINUGUAN (meat cooked in pig's blood and vinegar), BOPIS (this is made from lungs, stomach, heart of pig or cow), ISAW (intestines of chicken or pig... either fried or barbequed)

I TOO HAVE HAD SQUIRREL AND DUMPLINGS. THEY WERE NOT TOO BAD! AS A CHILD A NEIGHBOR COOKED SOME STRANGE THINGS WHICH I TRIED. ONE WAS ROASTED RACCOON. I CANT RECOMMEND THAT. IT LOOKED AS TERRIBLE AS IT TASTED. MY SISTER ONCE ATE A DOG POO. BUT NOT ON PURPOSE. TEE HEE!

I don't think that this is simply a matter of being narrow-minded. Some of these foods must be prepared in a VERY precise manner and eaten within a VERY specific time frame to avoid getting quite ill. It's just not "safe" to eat some of this stuff from street vendors or marketplaces, even restaurants sometimes. On the other hand, there's just something inherently wrong about eating the fetus or putrified carcass of another creature. It doesn't seem so bad if it's "fresh" and "well cooked"....

I've had bacon and eggs more than once....
Amy Oct 9th 2007 8:55PM
Just FYI, the chicken eggs you get at grocery stores are unfertilized, meaning that there is no fetus or chick in there.

I've eaten a lot of exotic meats - including rattlesnake "cakes", ostrich hot dogs, squirrel, raccoon, octopus, clams, squid, shark, kangaroo jerky, Cajun alligator, beaver burger, pheasant, elk, bison, and more. Of course, in a French restaurant in Montreal I dined on escargot in butter cream sauce. Real good!

I don't remember the exact name something like Galoot or Baloot but I remember the sound of the people eating them on Fear Factor, a destinctive crunch. What they were were ducklings unhatched fully developed but not alive, whether or not they were boiled or otherwise prepared I couldn't know, but the people eating them ate everything but the shell, bones and all. That is one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen or heard of anyone eating.

In Oaxaca Mexico I ate champolenes (spelling?)which are small crispy fried grasshoppers. I brought some home and gave them to my kids one night on their dinner plates, the look on their faces was priceless, but after the shock, they actually thought they tasted ok.
I also had octopus, which for me was strange.
