Is The Local Team Wearing Red?
I dabble in a bit of sports writing in New Zealand, so when I'm on the road I try and get along to a local sports event. It's a great way to get a feel for a place.
Here's my top five suggestions for on the road sports experiences.
- Watching Boca Juniors in the cauldron of Buenos Aire's La Bombonera soccer stadium
- Chowing down on hot dogs at a Yankees vs Red Sox game in the Bronx (and sorry New Yorkers, but the standard of food available was the worst I've seen at any sports event in the world)
- Discovering the joys of Australian Rules Football at Melbourne's cavernous Melbourne Cricket Ground.
- Feeling every punch and sharp elbow watching Muay Thai (kick boxing) at Lumphini Stadium in Bangkok (with just maybe the best food)
- A day at the races (above) in the Sri Lankan hill town of Nuwara Eliya. I never did work out how you could place a bet on the horses, but the chill-laced snacks went great with a local Lion beer.

It's the Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG or the G for short. Next Saturday, the 29th is the AFL Grand Final (the final game that decides who is the winner of the league). This weeks game at the MCG had 97,000 people so expect next weeks to be closer to 100,000 people.

My time in the Czech Republic has turned me into an obsessive Ice Hockey fan. You just can't beat it for action, noise and excitement. It's the best 40Kc ($2US) entertainment you can buy your way into.
May i take this opportunity to report that the Olomouc Roosters www.hc-olomouc.cz are sitting one point from the top of the table at this early stage of the year.
And they wear red.

Visiting my cousin in Oaxaca, Mex. saw the Guerreros de Oaxaca pay the Potros de Tijuana. My cousins boyfriend knows someone who works in the club, so at the gates we got waved in for free. We sat in some nicer seats right behind the home dugout. Corona's in the stands were 15pesos, some chorizo tostadas were maybe 20pesos. They had had tortas, hot dogs and burgers at the concession stands. The cool thing to do was to get McDonalds next to the stadium and sneak it into the game, which the girls we were with did being bored of the game. The cheerleaders/dancers they had were pretty risqué, compared to in the states and they also only danced in front of the away dugout. Im guessing for distraction. The team had a 4 run come back win. I also got an official newera cap for 270pesos, regular price in states is 30$. They had non-official merch outside the stadium for real cheap, 200pesos for a jersey, 100-150pesos for hats. The best time I had at a baseball game ever.
