The Passport Crunch is Over!
The State Department optimistically announced September 7 that Americans can now receive passports "in a timely and secure fashion." The wait is allegedly back to to 6-8 weeks for a standard application and 3 weeks for expedited service. In order to deal with the massive backlog of applications, the department hired hundreds of new adjudicators, temporarily transferred employees to passport centers, and opened a new facility. By September 30, it expects to have issued 17 million new passports since last October, up from 12 million the previous year.
As for me? I'm going to wait until after the New Year to renew mine, just in case I want to leave the country over winter break.... I guess I'm just not as optimistic as the State Department.

I think they were always fibbing about this. It really took longer, so you are right not to trust them. John applied, and then the timeframe did not really start until the cashed the check for the application, which was about 3 weeks later.
I would wait until after the holidays too!

It too my mom 2 weeks to get hers back in July. The whole bloody mess is stupid. Mine should take abotu the same amount of time. Expediting is key!

I just applied for a passport last week, and paid for the expidited service. I almost fell out of my chair when my passport arrived three days later. (I paid with a money cashiers check, not a personal check. That may affect process time.)

Received our passports last week. It took three weeks--not expedited.
