World's First Space Hotel Plans to Open in 2012
Please pardon the forthcoming cheesiness, but here's a story that's quite literally out of this world: The world's first space hotel is slated to open in 2012. What began as a hobby for Barcelona architect Xavier Claramunt is about to become a reality, thanks to careful planning and perseverance ... not to mention $3 billion that he fronted for the project. Guests of the Galactic Suite can fly around the world in 80 minutes, see the sun rise 15 times a day and experience the weightlessness that has until now been limited mostly to astronauts. Wearing Velcro suits, guests can navigate their way through the luxury hotel. There's only one problem though -- bathrooms. They've got the showering part figured out -- guests will float through a 'spa room' filled with bubbles of water, but they seem to be trying to figure out a way for guests to do 'other' duties in a way that is luxurious enough to justify the exorbitant price tag.
Speaking of the price, it's $4 million for a 3-night stay, including an eight-week training session. And while I think the experience would be amazing, I can't see myself spending that much money on a hotel unless it has a really nice pool and room service. But then again, I've never had the liberty of spending money as a millionaire would, so who knows?

Uh, hello its dangerous enough for the astronauts to be going to space! Now they plan on having a hotel there for the public? That's beyond crazy. Do people really think these things through? I suppose they figure technology will be better in 5 years...but if ya'll don't recall we were supposed to be driving around in flying cars in the year 2000. ...maybe its just me, but my car doesn't fly.
I highly doubt this will happen. If it does, I can only imagine how many "accidents" and people dying will happen.
I cant believe someone is funding something so stupid. There are people dying and starving...but no, who cares about those people, lets just waste a billions of dollars opening a hotel in space. Yep, that sounds like a great plan! ugh.

We might as well prepare, we are destroying the Earth more quickly than she can repair herself. We all might need somewhere to stay when she dies...

"This is just the begining of our great adventure into space"
Thats the truth. I wonder how long after this project this kind of thing will be accessible to the general public.
I think a vacation at a lunar casino would be freakin sweet.

I slapped my ol' Black AMExpress down a couple weeks ago. I can hardly wait for the experience! I understand by then that it will be greatly enhanced possibly even with a safari space walk!

Dang!!!!
I agree with adri! Where do I sign up??? What a great adventure! Maybe there's a Commander Riker out there somewhere, just waiting on an 'experienced' woman to spend his holodeck time with.
And BTW, Sara, never say never. Let's see, how many folks said that TV would never catch on? oh, and wasn't it Bill Gates who said something about not many people wanting 'home/portable' computers? then there's the cell phones that no one would ever want to use and, and, and....well you get the idea.
Now if I can just win the lottery......

Just how Bill Gates said that nobody would ever need over 56k for storage on a computer. That didn't last too long. Even if I did have the money, I wouldn't waste it on something like that. Sure it'd be a great experience, but is it really worth spending $4 million dollars on just for three nights?(and the 8 - week training course)
Personally, I think there are better things to spend money on. For example, fund something that you support. Wether it be for scientific or medical research. It may just help you out someday, and save your life, or someone else's.

I was paralyzed over three years ago. There are numerous afflictions as such that are not curable, Cancer and AIDS to name a few. This is where our communities and world leaders should put money towards. NOT in a war for oil, Fancy cars that fly and definitely not in a space hotel. There are enough problems here on Earth that need attention before we should start capitalizing on the great beyond. Grow up and support a cause, do not indulge yourself at a bilionaire retreat that is merely a personal affront to humanity,

First of all, flying cars do exist - they are called "Ultralight Aircraft" and you can get one fairly inexpensively. Problem is there is no place to land/park them and you really wouldn't want them flying over your head because they do fall out of the sky from time to time.
Second, this won't happen because once again they have failed to factor in the R&D costs. We do not know how to build such a structure in space, and while I think it is certainly possible for us to figure it out, figuring things out costs a lot of money.
