World's Largest Ice Caves
.jpg)
Ice caves are very different from normal caves. They have a strange feeling about them, as though they are not from this planet, and one has just temporarily stepped into their world when spelunking their depths.
There are many ice caves throughout the world, but the Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves in Austria are some of the largest known to man. They are located within the Tennengebirge Mountains near Salzburg and stretch for a remarkable 40 kilometers. Only a portion of the labyrinth is open to tourists but it's enough to get a taste of what the remaining network is like: a truly mesmerizing palate of Mother Nature's handicraft.
For a photographic journey through these amazing caves, click on the link below and delve into the icy realms of Eisriesenwelt--the World of Ice Giants.

Look like a depressing version of Superman's fortress of solitude.

lots of people still have no idea about the global warming problem we are facing. I wonder how long can these caves last? I pray hard for the future generations to be able to enjoy it as well

My wife and I visited the Ice Caves a few years ago and it was an unforgettable experience! It is amazingly beautiful, and well worth the effort.
Do be forewarned .. 1) the inside temperature is quite cold even when it's very hot outside. 2) there is a considerable number of stairs to climb, and the terrain is constantly rising while climbing. One needs a warm jacket to do this tour, and perhaps even gloves, because there is often ice coating the handrails for some of the stairs.
Even so, it is well worth the visit!

Hi, Beautiful pictures!
I am planning to go to Austria and see the Ice caves (either this or Dachstein) but I am not an athelete or hiking person, can I manage to go till the ice cave, also what kind of foot wears are required to walk on that ice floor so that I don’t end up falling on my face and last but not least, how you manage to click photos/video, their websire says it is not allowed!

I had been to the wonderfull caves in May'09. It is really natural wonder of the world. You must use LED lamps in place of oil lamps you give to visitors.
Road connecting cave is sleepery. Also provide Coat (at a charges). Why cable car possible further as old age visitors can not walk so much. One must visit cave during visit to Europe. I give more value to this cave than Forts or palaces.
It can be more attraction than Swaroski musium,if awareness given. I will surely visit cave again and again. I am Indian and going to write on caves in local tourist information magazines. Small cave in North India called AMARNATH is nothing compared to this cave as there are many shiv ling in this cave.

I've been there, it's amazing. There's even a small restaurant when you get near the top.

Beautiful formations! I have visited caves formed by tectonic activity and they are densely inhabited by bats.
I wonder if creatures can survive in ice caves at all.
Great pics!
