The Growing Trend of Pod Hotels
London is one of the most expensive cities on this planet which means that any time I discover ways to save money while there, it makes me very happy.
Last week we wrote about the new Yotel in Heathrow Airport which rents pod-like cabins to transit customers for just $51 per four hours.
But what about those travelers who want to save money in the center of town and are willing to sacrifice a bit of space in order to do so?
According to the Los Angeles Times, there is a growing trend of "diminutive digs" that take advantage of the need for clean, functional accommodations that sacrifice space for affordability. London, for example, is blessed with three EasyHotel locations ($51 per night) as well as the slightly more expensive, Base2Stay ($165).
But it's not only London. $54 pod-like rooms are also available through the Qbic chain in the Netherlands, and the Pod Hotel in New York City ($89 a night).
I've spent my share of time in small hotel rooms, but I'm sure a night in a "pod" is an entirely different experience. I'd either acclimate very quickly, or go stark raving mad from cabin fever and ax-murder someone.
Either way, I'm willing to give it a try.

http://www.base2stay.com (correct link to hotel site!) is the one place I, as a travel writer, recommend to people visiting London.
Just to be clear, though, it's not a pod hotel - the rooms are cheap because they got rid of restaurants, kitchens and such like - you get a room with a kitchenette, great beds and you can bring in / order in your choice of food.
Sure keeps the price down! Alun

I suggested the NY Pod Hotel to a friend here in Australia who was touring the US - she said it was absolutely fab. Great accomodations at a low price - was perfect for a side trip to NY.
