In April 1992 my passport (and wallet and all ID) turned up missing on a trip in western Ukraine. Took a 12 hour train overnight to Kiev where the nice folks at the new U.S. embassy couldn't help me and said I'd have to go to Moscow or wait 3 weeks till one of them went. I couldn't exactly wait, so they rustled me up an English-speaking student and this stranger took me on another 12-hour overnight roach-infested train ride to Moscow, accompanied me to the embassy and then took me on a whirlwind tour of Moscow before the train back to Kiev left.
This whirlwind tour included a stop at the Moscow McD's. Best Big Mac I've ever tasted in my life.
