Travel Warnings for Americans
Not that I regularly browse these kinds of Web sites but the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Web site actually has some handy information, for example the countries for which Americans have visa requirements.
Among other things, they publish a list of countries with "travel warnings" for Americans. Those countries currently are:
- Afghanistan
- Algeria
- Chad
- Colombia
- Congo
- East Timor
- Eritrea
- Indonesia
- Iran
- Iraq
- Israel
- Kenya
- Lebanon
- Nepal
- Nigeria
- Pakistan
- Philippines
- Saudi Arabia
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Syria
- Uzbekistan
- Yemen
- France (just kidding)

All the romantic vacation spots.

While I was in Nigeria I witnessed several "murders" by the local police. The victims were real Nigerian criminlas, but any justice system or trial was bypassed none the less... bodies were put on display at the outdoor markets to set an example. I brought pictures of this back to the states. As an American working in Nigeria, I was horrified by their actions.

... and about France... The last time I was there, which was about 10 years ago, they still didn't much care for Americans... and that's putting it lightly.

With all the fun spots taken, I'll have to go to Kim Jon Ill land for vacation. lol

We live in such a great country with so much to see here I do not know why anyone would want to go anywhere else. If you want a vacation, pack up the family, rent an RV, and go cross country. It is a beautiful sight. The scenery and wildlife you see along the way is nothing like you can see in any country listed above. You may come across the occasional wild animal that tries to steal your food but, that is all he wants to steal from you.

You only live once. See as much as you can before you have to leave. I've done 66 countries and still counting.
mARIE Aug 8th 2007 8:01AM
Wow, I'd like to be able to visit 66 countries. Maybe one day. But way to go Stan.
Deannah Aug 8th 2007 7:52AM
Great traveler Stan. Way to go. I hope you see many many more countries. There are times that I wish I could visit different countries. The closest I've ever been to visiting a different country is Canada and that's because it's easy to get to from where I live. Canada is a beautiful place to visit.

My husband from Amman Jordan and I notice that country was not mention in the list?I don't know why cause all the Iraq people have over populated Jordan.

If you havent seen the U.S. inc Alaska and Hawaii, Montana, Maine, the Keys etc, why in the hell would you want to travel overseas to a foreign country ?
We are NOT a loved people ! Not by a long shot ! I have NO sympathy for Americans going overseas and being kidnapped, ransomed, killed, etc . You walk into fire, Yep, you'll get burned !

I'm in France right now, and all we get are warm welcomes, and smiles. We have several friends here, so the animosity towards Americans must have changed from 10 years ago. Things usually do.

I visited Colombia in June and it was wonderful. If you look at the British or Canadian Dept. of State equivalent websites, you get a more accurate picture of where travel is dangerous. We followed the recommended safety precautions for Colombia (don't drink the water, stay in big cities, etc.) and we were fine. I felt safer in Cartagena, Colombia than I do in Baltimore, MD.

People travel to other countries because it's fun to experience other cultures. Americans are hated in many of those countries because they are arrogant and take that attitude with them with they travel. If you respect the country you visit by trying to learn the language and some of the customs before you go they will appreciate your effort and treat you much differently than if you go there with the typical "I am American, you must cater to me now!" attitude.

COME TO COSTA RICA. NO PROBLEMS HERE! WE'RE ALL VERY AMERICANIZED, AND THERE ARE LOTS OF PLACES TO VISIT... BEACHES, VOLCANOS, RAIN FOREST...
IT'S ONLY A 2.5 HRS. FLIGHT.
Gina Aug 8th 2007 8:54AM
It has always been widely known that the French folk
frown upon us Americans. Of course, it is also widely known that if not for us pushy Americans, they
would be speaking German today...

Gina, your used up silly cliche....

Reading some of the comments here makes me laugh. Why would I want to go to a foreign country if I haven't seen some areas of the U.S.? Because it offers a way of life and scenery that is different than the U.S.! DUH! If we are not a loved people, as Al suggests, then maybe we need to find out why. I've been to six different countries and found friends everywhere I went. Why? Because I appreciated my opportunity to travel and explore other cultures. I've listened comments about bad American behavior coupled with compliments regarding my own. People as a whole are not stupid and understand that you cannot judge a country by the ignorance and arrogance of a few. Sometimes all anyone has to do is open their eyes and their heart, then sit back and enjoy the experience!

Right on, Melissa, and also Kelly. We recently hosted a student from France. He said that the French people love Americans, but dislike our government. I lived overseas for a few years, and would cringe when I encountered another American - usually brash, loud, and demanding. We should understand as Americans that we are not "all that!"
Linda Aug 8th 2007 9:00AM
Gee Melissa, does your thinking also apply to the mexicans, japanese, etc? Should they also learn our language and customs before visiting OUR country? And if so, why the heck are instuction manuals written in every language under the sun!!!???
arthurlejeune Aug 8th 2007 9:02AM
And if it weren't for the French, we'd probably be singing "God Save the Queen" today. Somehow, when people make that comment about France and Germany, they always seem to forget what we owe the French from even further back.
