Where on Earth? Week 18

Yes, both lines are for the same McDonald's. The second photo was taken around the corner from the beginning of the line in the first photo. It took my friends and me 45 minutes to simply get in the front door.
So, Where on Earth was this photo taken? There is one thing to take into consideration, however. I took this photo in 1991. If you were to go to this same location today, the line would not stretch out the door.
Think you know where it is? Take a guess in the comments section below and check back on Friday for the answer.

No need to guess, I know it well. It's Moscow just off Pushkinskaya Ploshad, and I was there too!! There was a real carnival atmosphere when the doors first opened, and it took hours to get in. For many years thereafter a trip to McDonalds was very much a serious culinary experience...although you are right, you no longer have to wait so long to get your junk food fix.
Neil, did you ever hit the Sports Bar on the Arbat, the expats' watering hole of choice for many years?

Beat me to it. First McDonalds to open in Moscow.

Reminds me of the Hello Kitty craze at the McDonalds restaurants in Singapore, in 2000.

John,
Yes, I did get a chance to visit the sports bar once or twice. Lots of fun! Now there are lots of expat bars in Moscow.

The picture is about a year and half old (and thus the wrong season), but this is what it looks like now.

I had an inkling from the picture provided, but the angle hid the distinctive part of the building behind that kiosk (which is now different also.)
