Google Transit Provides Directions via Public Transport
Another tip of the hat to Google for doing their very best to get us where we want to go.
In this case, it's via public transport.
Google Transit, buried over on the Google Labs page, aims to get pedestrians from one part of town to the other using only mass transportation – a noble concept indeed!
The beta program is currently only available in Burbank (CA), Orange County, San Diego, Tampa, Honolulu, Duluth, Reno, Eugene, Portland, Pittsburgh, Austin, Seattle, and the entire country of Japan.
To get an idea of how it works, I plugged in directions from Seattle Airport to my friend's house in the suburbs. The results below, which actually include walking times, are pretty cool.
Keep it up Google!

I guess they are starting small. Pittsburgh is what? One mile? I don't see New York or London. In fact, they are a number of good trip planners for the New York subway already. The Google benefit would the ease of access from Google maps.

This is already available for London, see the 'Journey Planner' at:
www.tfl.gov.uk
Integrates buses, Underground (subway) trains and walking. Works very well.

They have to start somewhere. Actually, I think Orange County is pretty large and a challenge because of thin coverage in public transportation.

Good for Google - another step on their journey to conquer the world! There is a nifty Facebook app called My Bus that does something similar for Vancouver, Canada.
