Wow, great post for others! I'd also add for San Francisco Bay Area folk, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach is a must-see: http://www.fitzgeraldreserve.org/
I've had some great photo shoots of anemones, sea urchins, and sea stars. Lots of pink colored animals in that area. The Olympic Peninsula of Washington (and probably Vancouver Island in Canada), however, has a lot of orange and purple:
