You can do african safaris on the cheap y'know - just get to Africa, (which admittedly can be the expensive bit, but not as much as you might think) rent a 4x4, and bugger off into the bush of a reserve. You don't HAVE to have a guide, or luxury lodges, or the rest of it.
After all, it's how the original african explorers did it! (er, without the 4x4 obviously...)
