Cities That Need a Vacation
The August 2007 issue of Men's Health (don't ask me why I read it being a woman of poor heath) gathered a list of the "most workaholic" U.S. cities. They measured how residents punch the clock and logged their overtime; monitored their commute times, blood pressure and self-reported stress.
Yep, you are all wrong ... New York ranked 37 on the list.
Here is the Top 10 list of cities that are all work, no play:
-
Manchester, NH
-
San Francisco, CA
-
Denver, CO
-
Orlando, FL
-
Durham, NC
-
Charlotte, NC
-
Aurora, CO
-
Boise, ID
-
Seattle, WA
-
Anaheim, CA
Least workaholic? Milwaukee, WI; El Paso, TX; and Rochester, NY. Go figure!
Apparently, survey shows that people could leave work 44 days earlier if they just cut back on Web surfing. Not suggesting, you should log off from Gadling, of course.

Hmm, I live in Manchester... and that just does not seem right.

Yes, I would like to know where Aurora, California is also.
Nan Jul 25th 2007 8:51AM
Hmmmm- I live in Boise and that doesn't seem right either!

Where's Washington DC on this list? That's a town where people brag about how many hours they work each week as if it's a measure of honor.

Aurora, Ca is near Modesto in inland central California.

So my city is number two, but I'm definitely bringing down the curve.
Except for the internet surfing part. That I'm doing pretty darn well on.
(When Crabby's not mindlessly web surfing she's giving people silly health advice at http://crankyfitness.blogspot.com/)

I'm surprised New York is not on this list. I've been to NYC many times, and let me tell you, New Yorkers are always in a rush, always hustling to get somewhere.

Yes, you are right. It should be Aurora, CO. I fixed it.
Also, Washington DC is No 51 Most Workaholic on the list.

I live in Boise Idaho also and I think I might have an idea why we are #8 here,,,, Our pay scale is lower then,,,, lets say California,,,,, so we have to work alot to get ahead

i think you are forgetting Auburn Hills,MI. people in the automotive industry work 18 hour days and are always on the verge of loosing there jobs and they dont brag to anyone about hours they work because thay work on weekends to make ends meet.
Scoota Jul 25th 2007 11:56AM
I wouldn't expect Manchester to be top on the list.

Living in Boise I can attest to this article. I don't really think it's a workaholic thing rather than there aren't enough qualified workers for the amount of jobs here. That and the fact that the bumper sticker that reads " Welcome to Idaho the Slave Labor State" is a true fact. If you don't work the overtime you will be fired. How's that for workers rights?
davidnh Jul 25th 2007 12:54PM
that funny i did not think anyone that worked lived in manchester , as soon asyou get a job you get the heck out
manchesters motto have you been stabed lately

Hannah Jul 25th 2007 1:15PM
i'm so surprised that new york is not #1! denver is definitely a workaholic city, though- everyone here needs to take some time off!
Mary Jul 25th 2007 2:08PM
I'm from Denver and I guessed we would make the list before I read the article. It must true about surfing the net though, as I intended to do a work-related project but am writing this comment instead.

Where is Phoenix on this list? I think Phoenix is an incredibly intense city with harsh employment laws.

A bad day on vacation always beats a good day at work
