The Sweatiest Cities in America
"If you ever need to fill a swimming pool with sweat, and you need to do it in a hurry," reads this article by Live Science, "you might enlist the entire population of Phoenix, Ariz., home to the sweatiest people in the nation." Mmm ... a swimming pool filled with sweat: how refreshing! For the second year in a row, Phoenix is ranked the number 1 sweatiest city in America, producing "26 ounces of sweat per hour while walking outdoors." With a population of 1.5 million, that's 39 million ounces of sweat in one city, or almost 2 million 20-ounce bottles worth per hour. Wow! Here are the 10 sweatiest cities in America (or where not to travel to this summer):
- Phoenix
- Las Vegas
- Tucson, Ariz.
- Dallas
- Corpus Christi, Texas
- San Antonio, Texas
- Austin, Texas
- Shreveport, La.
- Houston
- Waco, Texas

I live in #6 and it is not nearly as bad a a city that is not even on the list....New Orleans. I would pick N.O. as number one with Houston number two.

I have been to most of the cities on that list. I too could not believe that New Orleans wasn't on the top of the list! Try an August afternoon in NO before one of those semi cooling muggy 5 minute rains come off the ocean. About an hour after that shower is one of the most miserable and humid times i have ever spent. And I love that city!!!

This seems bizarre to me. I've visited Phoenix and Las Vegas and can categorically state that walking about in a desert leaves you extremely unsweaty. In fact, I've never sweated so little!

I am surprised not to see San Juan, Puerto Rico in that listing. Or, was it restricted to continental US?
Best,
Mark

If anyone doubts there is a vengeful and angry God, go to Texas in July

Yes, It is hot in Phoenix in the Summer. However, we go from air conditioned homes to air conditioned cars to air conditioned Offices , restaurants and stores. Phoenix still has a great deal to offer during the summer as well as the colder months. We have more sunny days, great spas and resorts. Find a fabulous Spa at http://www.spavelous.com and fabulous resorts, see http://www.arizonaresortsgetaway.com. During the summer is probably the best time to come here. You get all the luxury, and great prices too. Often in the summer you will get the best hotel rates and frequently they will give you money back to spend in the spa or restaurants. PS Phoenix people are cool, they never let you see them sweat! It is so hot it evaporates as it hits the air. You have a few months of summer left, don't take my word for it, Come to Arizona and judge for yourself!

I am a native of Phoenix, I've lived here for 72 yrs. I wouldn't have a bicycle without A/C!

I live in La Feria, Texas... It don't get any hotter! Just to walk across the porch... you break a sweat! I live for winters.

I am suprised H-town is currently on the list. Ten years ago maybe we were rated # 1. But, # nine no way Jose.

I agree with the desert people. I live in Denver, and it is absolutely great. No sweat. If so, then retreat to the mountains. Most sweat I can think of was Buenos Aires when it was 35° C.
Lynn Jul 4th 2007 8:42PM
Yes Texas is hot. We believe in air conditions. At least if your air breaks down you can go to your nearest WAL-Mart or your neighbors house. In TEXAS we are very friendly. Thank You YOU ALL COME BACK YA'HERE.

The fourth comment listed is so onto something. I grew up in an area very close to Phoenix, and with it being so dry, there is absolutely no way someone can sweat more there than in Dallas. As soon as I step outside in Dallas I feel as though I need another shower - it's as humid as all get out.

I live in Corpus Christi...been to or lived in the others. If we are talking SWEATIEST, then New Orleans should be first, with Houston and Corpus Christi a close second. They are all 3 SWEATTTTY! The others are hot, but it is a drier heat than the high percentages of humidity we live with here daily, on the Gulf of Mexico.

My daughters and I went to Orlando, FL in July. One of the worst places to be in July. Great place to be in January though.
JacksonvilleJack Jul 4th 2007 8:50PM
Hmmm no place in Florida made the 10? I thought Arizona was hot and dry? No humidity. Try waking up in Jacksonville Fla., at 7am and step outside and start sweating. Been there and still doing it.
Terry Jul 4th 2007 8:53PM
Why isn't Washington DC on that list. Went there one year in July and thought I was going to melt. You can't stay dry. Like living in a steam bath.
Ralph Garcia Jul 4th 2007 8:59PM
Miami is the worst if you go on the beach during the day. The sand is so white that it heats up the coastline further. Don't get me wrong, I love Miami winters. But when it comes to summertime, it's brutal. Try cutting the lawn during a summer day. Summer nights are almost as bad as the temperature only dips down a few degrees at night. Just stay away from the beach at summer. I've seen paramedics called for people on the beach who smoke. It's hot enough there so why would anyone want to fill their lungs with more hot air?
Larry Lasky Jul 4th 2007 9:05PM
Ok Then why is Phoenix growing so fast maybe all of us in Phoenix like to sweat. I work outside and yes I do believe your calculations and on a post note your right why would anyone visit us in the summer.
This state has so much to offer year round but Phoenix is best visited in the winter
jeff Jul 4th 2007 9:07PM
I find that poll funny. 80 and humid in the midwest or Texas is worse than 110 in Vegas or Ariz. I visit both quite often and never even break a sweat.
