Ourman complains that an article on this site assumes to be written to Americans. Will "America On Line" please apologize and defer him?
Terry Jun 27th 2007 5:10PM
Would be very interesting to consider the usage per country. Volume purchases of anything, in the global market place do drive lower costs.

I'm an American living in Turkey. The gas prices here are $8.45 per gallon. I just filled up my tank for $110. Wages here are not in line with these prices. I earn a very good wage at $27,000. Average wages here are about $11,250. It's very expensive to keep a car on the road here. Every time I go back to the USA I want to bring gasoline back with me!

It is totally misleading to compare prices of usa with europe. in europe govt. taxes gas more than usa . but europeans ger FREE health insurance from govt. and for a plot of house 50 x 100 the annual property tax would be about 300 dollars compared to usa (newjersey for example) 6000 dollars. so given a choice we americans would rather pay 10=00 per gallon and get free health insurance and low home taxes !! However us ignorant americans dont know about this and the OIL companies spread this misleading propoganda that americans pay less than europeans for gas and make us feel good !!

Has no one noticed that 4 of the top ten Fortune 500 companies were oil. Exxon recorded profits of 39 BILLION dollars, and were surprisingly number 1. Joke. Highest profits of any company in the history of the world. It was the highest quarterly profit earnings as well. We can all be mad at each other about being different nationalities, or we could all look at the big picture that we are being run by greed and controlled by a very few. They say we should "feel lucky" certain places pay less than others. How about the oil companies should "feel lucky" we are all so dumb and we haven't done anything about it. By the way Exxon has never had to share how much they pay per barrel to the public. Raise any flags? Also there has not been any new refineries built since the 70's to increase production = lower prices.

Poor America - richest nation on earth and they can't afford a health service or public transport.
Stop voting for people who cut taxes and there might be a little left to buy these things.
Hey - or you could pay the same taxes on gas that we do and there be lots of money left over.
You only get what you pay for.
I'm sorry but some of the ignorance on here is beyond belief. Our Gallon is bigger then theirs. Oh please.
And America now even denies voting for Bush. "Bush didn't win the popular vote" - absolutely totally and utterly wrong. Try this:
"Bush received about 51 percent of the votes cast (62 million votes), making him the first presidential candidate to win a majority of the popular vote since his father George H. W. Bush in the presidential election of 1988"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_US_election
You get the president, and it seems, the public transport and health service you deserve.

For those of you who have never visited another country outside of Canada or Mexico, most European countries have better benefits, but at a price. It is not your choice to not pay the social taxes. Also, $50,000 Euro's do not go as far as $50,000. It goes far less. Everything in Europe is way more expensive than in the US. It is a fact of life and we must adjust better and prepare for the times to come.
Yes, I am not the biggest fan of Mr. Bush, but the events that happened and led to higher gas prices are written in the BIBLE. They were going to happen no matter who is in office.
What we have to do is have better public transportation and make the local officials accountable for the situation. We have to be better managers of our money. Not going after every new gadget on the market. America is the worst economy for saving money of any modern competetive economy. Last year Americans saved -%1. I would rant some more but my time at work is up. I'll rant later tonight.

Universal health care is not free! These countries pay a lot in taxes to fund their health care systems.
Pepto Jun 28th 2007 11:30AM
How current are these numbers? Current gas prices in Chicago range from $3.20-$3.50.
Nathan Jun 27th 2007 5:39PM
I have been in most of all of these places in the last 2 years. And one thing NEVER come's up with
the survey's.
Their mass transportation is superp. Our mass transportation STINK'S big time in America.
For instant in Germany one does hardly need a car
their system matches almost NOBODY in the world. Plus one more thing
The distance in these countries are not as great
as in our's. We visit friends 2 hours away on the spur of the moment. These people would NEVER think of doing so. It's mayby once a year. In other words
it's much easier to get around and America is way
behind the A BAll with mass transportation.
Nathan Jun 27th 2007 5:47PM
# 8 Mr Kimble
you know your stuff and I totaly agree with you.
They make a lot more money than we do over in Europe.
I have sister's there and I know. Mass transport
beats our's by a mile, very few people go further to work than 30 minutes. We have big ,ugly Hummer's
and flaunt our arroganze. Don't compare Europe with US it's another ball game.
Ansley Cohen Jun 29th 2007 5:04PM
We need the Federal Trade Commission to INVESTIGATE the actual reason for the price of gasoline.
Lionel Ripepe Jun 27th 2007 6:03PM
we are getting ripped off our govt`s packed with crooks that are in kahoots with al quida and the oil billionair.
Paula Jun 27th 2007 6:10PM
I live in the usa and if i recall right the oil "PEOPLE" earned billions of dollars last year I made 24 thousand there is a big diffrence in this country between the rich and the poor it stinks and i did not vote for bush
Grace Jun 28th 2007 12:26PM
The problem here seems to be that a lot of the people reading these posts have never been to these other places where gas prices are higher. I saw a couple of the oil company CEOs on the talk shows talking about how much they are investing in refineries and alternative fuels. The one CEO I think it was Chevron who said "well we are investing $2 billion," but he sure shut up as soon as the reporter said "well sir that's 1/10th of 1% of your profits isn't it?"
We have lived with cheap energy for years. The government does not want more refineries for whatever reason, but the Republicans would destroy the Arctic and national parks to drill for more oil which would add maybe 2% to our supply. Then again our President, our VP and a lot of their people are oilmen.
The issue here is stop being so wasteful. One of my neighbors looked at a Hummer and when he asked how many miles per gallon, the salesman said more like how many gallons per mile and smiled. Americans are wasteful, and a lot of us do not give a hoot about the future. Global warming? No it doesn't exist, even when Europe is boiling, certain countries are seeing snow for the first time in hundreds of years, but hey, let our kids and grandkids worry about that. Corrupt politicians? Hey it doesn't matter because your vote doesn't count, you can vote for the one guy and the majority can, but an outdated Electoral College says that the other guy wins, which was ok in 1776 when the country was filled with illiterate farmers, furtraders and whatever person could get on a boat and get over here...so that really does not mean ONE MAN ONE VOTE. We will let the next generation handle our problems, that seems to be the philosophy today, and all I can say is God Help Them, if we don't change our ways....
Europeans and other countries have universal health care, while in our country people die in ERs while waiting to be helped, or our old people have to decide between food and their meds. We give tax breaks to the people who make the most money, while we do little for those who have the least. We complain when we see Mexicans picking fruit and vegetables, but no white American I know who do that work for that pay, and then we say send them all home when we know that a lettuce would cost us $10 if we did.
Things are screwed up big time and it will take 2-3 Presidents to fix it, if they can....
Carla Owens Jun 27th 2007 6:29PM
So what if gas prices are higher around the world, what does that have to do with Americans. I have a problem with the oil companies lining there pockets. To add insult to injury they get on the news and announce how good there profits have been while some people have to sell property to make ends meet. I normally dont reply to these blogs but it @(**&@$ me off to see the authors comments while I am sure he makes more than $ 6.50 hr min wage how could they be so uncaring. THe bottom line is if the oil companies profits are so great there is no need for the prices to be so high.
donexodus Jun 28th 2007 3:49PM
Anyone else find it very amusing that all the places higher than the US are in HUGE font, while those lower are almost impossible to read?
Nathan Jun 27th 2007 6:31PM
One more time
Let's not compare Europe with the USA, their is NOTHING close to our way of life.I have sister's living there and know all about Europe.
They make a lot more money than we do. They have almost free, mandetory healthcare(better than ours)
Nobody I know drives further than 30 minutes to work.
And now to the clincher.
Their children go to best College ALMOST FREE(about 600 Euros a year) They save like crazy and their mass transport makes us look like a Third World Country. May be are one,I am starting to think so.
Jonathan Jun 27th 2007 6:39PM
PEOPLE
1 Gallon equals = 3.6 Liter ( do your math now)
let's get it right. I see all these figures tossed
around and NONE of them is correct.
Jeff M Jun 27th 2007 6:50PM
I don't know where they got their figures, but New York gas prices are more like $3.10 a gallon (with a few cheaper exceptions) than $2.76.
I hope the others are more accurate... .
