For me, a dream vacation involves a wide, white, sandy beach for relaxing on; bathtub-warm, blue water for scuba diving in (or sailing over); a very funny book for transporting me a bit further from home; and a bar nearby that serves frozen drinks -- for all the rest of the time. While I certainly enjoy active vacations, I also enjoy laying around a bit. Consequently, I'm always on the lookout for ideas about islands worth visiting.

According to this list, the Top 20 islands in the world -- based on Activities, Beaches, Culture/Sites, Lodging, Restaurants, and Scenery are:

The site provides details about what makes each island special, though some of the descriptions are as spare as the islands themselves. Nevertheless, the list makes a nice jumping-off-point if you're dreaming about island travel...

WOW good to see phuket on that list, we love phuket and take all our friends there whenever they come to visit Phuket is packed with activitys and relaxation, patong beach is great for action and karon/kata is great for relaxation. Phuket is a must on new years! if you've never been check it out for sure! Songkran is Great as well! sad to not see koh samui on this list, it has nearly everything phuket has to offer but a much more island feel. while phuket is technically an island a small bridge connects it to the mainland. A must do if you visit phuket take a day trip to koh phi phi and maya bay, and do some snorkeling!! Cheers I hope everyone enjoys their islands wherever they are in the world.

Way to go Cape Breton! I have done "The Trail" numerous times, and the beauty never ceases to amaze me.

Bali.......heading their on vacation for a month beginning July 24th. I can't wait.
