The World's Most Expensive Cities
Mercer, a human resource consulting company, has compiled a list of the most expensive cities in the world based on a cost of living survey which "measures the comparative cost of over 200 items" in each city. Two years in a row Moscow has topped the list, followed by London, Seoul, and Tokyo. Here's the top 10:Most of the locations on the list were in Europe, taking thirty of the fifty spots, with six in the top 10. New York and L.A. are the only two from the United States in the top fifty. For the full list, head to Mercerhr.com. [via]

Apparently this research is strongly biased. The Brazilian Real gained 20% of value against the dollar (and a bit over Euro too) but Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo lost a lot of positions.

I don't see why Moscow would be so high up.

These stats are not biased or in any way "mysterious". They simply reflect the fact that the U.S. dollar has lost its value relative to the currencies of these cities/nations listed, and it simply takes more "dollars" to live in these cities than it does to survive as comfortably in New York, L. A., Miami. etc., etc. A "reverse inflation", of sorts, for investors looking to invest in this country. Go to CNBC for more info......

Moscow is expensive because of supply and demand. They only have about 5 decent apartment buildings in the whole city so people are willing to pay top dollar for them. The rest of the people live in tiny 1 bedroom flats with 50 year old stoves and toilets that they share with their neighbors. At least in the other cities your money buys a little beauty and style. Moscow sucks and blows.

This survey is misleading. I agree that London is 2nd most expensive city in the world. But please. New York is the city. Money will flow out of your pocket in New York. About 100 times faster than Mos cow. My parking garage in NYC cost $675/month. In New York, there are actually great things to spend money on. Beleive me - Manhattan - Not Queens/ Broooklyn is #1 expensive city.

I'm kind of surprised to see Hong Kong on this list. I just returned from living there for four and a half months and felt that it was very inexpensive, and that's saying a lot from a student who was living off of a small student loan. Yes-it was more expensive than other cities in the region but I lived comfortably spending around 400 US dollars a month and that's taking into account sightseeing activities.

I live in Seoul, and I never would have thought that it would be third on this list! Taking my salary into account, in proportion, the cost of living is far cheaper here than it is in London, or even Dublin.

Oh yeah, and Tokyo is definitely more expensive than Seoul... no question about that.
