The Cloud: A Dubai Resort in the Sky

Nadim Karam, a Lebanese architect, presented this resort-in-the-sky concept at the International Design Forum in Dubai last month. The actual resort will resemble a cloud floating 300 meters in the air, with slanting support beams that look like sheets of rain. Check out more pictures after the jump. [via]

To whoever said that the Waterpark in Dubai has the world's only upwards watertube ride, you're wrong. Schlitterbahn in South Texas actually patented the "blaster" technology behind it. They were the first to do it and were voted America's Best Waterpark several years in a row.
The hotel looks like an interesting design, but I'm not sure if it will actually work out.

I still do not understand!!!! Why are most of you refusing to see the starvation in that country (oh...do not let me mispell anything)
The women are raped and the children are killed!! I know about our state...I am a nurse here. I give tons of money to our homeless everyday. I give my time to charities.
We can do alot if we stand together and stop this STUPID fight.
Now let's help other nations as well... Why can't we. We have one life, that life should do something great!!

So, Don...
All Democrats now believe Hilary Clinton is going to save the US from Bush? We all realize that Bush isn't responsible for, hell, anything in this country. If he says something about the country, the Congress pats him on the head and says, "That's great, boy!" like he's a child. He's an icon, plain and simple. But the fact that he can't write a speech for himself AND give the speech without messing up 10 times?
Back to the original topic, the concept is impractible, but if you want to pay for the risk of falling down to your doom 300 metres below, go right ahead. I don't know why Dubai's economy had to be dragged into this. If they want to spend their money on useless things, let them.
We didn't leave Iraq alone, and look where that got them. Civil war, anyone? We should have stepped back before we got this idea of, "Hey, let's make them a democratic nation!" Hey, Congress, I hate to break it to you, but they still hate us. They're not that grateful right now.

Alex Crochet, not to be rude, but since you told Anita: "take a spelling class, it is spelled GUZZLER!," don't point fingers unless you know how to spell yourself. You stated "as soon as I can afford to drive a gas guzzling Ferrari I will defiantly do it!!!" If you meant "defiantly" as in hotheadedly, impetuously, impulsively or uncontrollably (which wouldn't really make sense), then you spelled it correctly; however, it you were intending to say you will "surely, certainly, indisputably, determinedly, etc." do it, then the correct spelling is "DEFINITELY."
Thanks! :)

The crazy ones are already jumping to conclusions that their country funds terrorists and we're to blame for it all because we buy alleged 'gas guzzlers'. Please people. You should go back to school because not one of you has a valid point. This is a CONCEPT design folks...an idea if you will, of what they have planned. The hatemongers and their trash talking are already oozing hate-filled speech and the one moron who said he wished someone to die in a terrorist attack inside their Ferrari? That kind of speech MAKES you a terrorist, how's that for an oxymoron, with the emphasis on MORON! If you wish harm on others that proves you don't have the education to admit you support extremists. What happened to freedom to buy what you want? I drive what I want and I don't give a damn what you people think! You should have earned a college degree and you could have a more stable life and successful career and happy home and then you wouldn't have pointless words as your only weapon! So I can afford to drive what I like...big deal...I can afford the gas too. Why don't you blame the oil companies and the auto makers for not stepping up to the plate where it matters? Blaming people for BUYING a certain vehicle makes no sense...it's none of your business anyway. Don't blame me because I did something with my life and can afford things that you only dream about. As far as the concept building...it's neat, but I doubt it will be built. Maybe something similar...but it's not my problem nor concern. But kudos on the design. Screw the hatemongers and their hate speech. I think I'll go buy some premium gas now and smile.

Wow, this is amazing. I've never commented in one of these forums before and I'm stunned by the support and/or comments. First, I would like to apologize for calling anyone an idiot for driving a gas guzzler (I corrected the spelling for you Alex). I shouldn't name call. Second, this simple forum proves my point in spades! Every action a person makes has an impact on all of us. Like the pebble in the pond with the ripples traveling ever further outwards. My comments caused a reaction beyond anything I would have anticipated. People who choose to be over-the-top in their consumerism, be it gas, food, housing, child bearing, blog comments or anything else "just because they can" or perhaps a religion that says they should, also affect all of us in ways they either haven't considered, or just don't care to consider. Everything has a consequence.

Hey, Alex Crochety, take a chill pill. What's pointless is getting your blood pressure up over something about which you have no say-so. As for pointless spending, it doesn't have to be. Plenty of people in the world can be helped with a tiny fraction of the money we spend on just about anything, necessary or not. Try a random act of kindness once in a while. Does wonders for your health and overall outlook on the world.

By the way, on the actual subject of the building, very unique.

I just read your comments. Some blame the Republicans, some blame the Democrats. Fact is, neither party has done anything constructive. There are just as many Demos in oil as there are Repubs. But money is made in oil, so, you're not going to be able to stop it without doing something.
These hybrid cars are a joke. You still need to buy fuel. And they should be getting better mileage. Let's do away with the internal combustion engine.
We can make electric cars work. Even if we have to put some bicycle peddles in them. We wouldn't necessarily need them, but if we were in good physical condition we could travel a lot more further. And most of us are in good enough shape to handle it. Most of us are just too lazy.
There are a lot of ideas out there. Let's start using some of them.

I lived in Dubai many years ago....'76-'77 to be exact, and let me tell you it was nothing compared to what it is now. I can remember waking up in my hotel room and looking out the window--I saw people sleeping on the roofs, animals going through trash that was littering the streets. Granted not all areas were as bad as that but it was hardly modern at all. I will say, I thoroughly enjoyed living there at the time though. Everything was new and exciting to me. I would love to take a trip there now.

Building? What building? Isn't this about gas prices and SPELLERZZ and IDIOTZZ LOLLLL Hummers and SUV's and ego-mania and how we can't even play nice together on a simple blog about a bldg that MAY not even happen? I don't care how affluent ANYONE is, and when the Planet is used up - we're all in the same boat - sinking - will the uber-rich elitists and money mongers just put on their Jetson Jet Pack and move to another planet???? Who cares about PEOPLE and KINDNESS and ECOLOGY?? I see a few on here who do and that is more impressive than ANY Ferrari or Hummer or whatever money can buy trinket..

I was just looking at previous posts that got way off the original subject of the "cloud building", and I would like to correct Reza who posted at #56. She is right that not all of the people in the Emirate of Dubai are rich. In fact, most of them are not even native Emiratis; the majority of the population are people from India, Pakistan, the Filippines and some African countries who come to Dubai and work to support the tourist industry, which is its HUGE money-maker not oil. Dubai's oil revenues account for less that 10% of its GDP. Dubai is a city of foreigners. However, in Dubai and ALL the other Emirate cities women CAN drive. It's Saudi Arabia where they cannot (at least not in the open in the cities; some of the more bold ones do go out into the desert and learn to drive). What Reza may not have understood about the restrictions on women using pools and other facilites at certain times and days is that it ALSO restricts the men from using those facilities at certain times and days! They can't use it when the women are there and vice versa, but everybody still gets a turn. Lastly, Dubai, as a member of the UAE, is an Islamic city , but it is not extremist. It is referred to as the "Paris of the Gulf" due to its high concentration of entertainment venues and nightlife, its restaurants and the Western ideals it has adopted, especially when it comes to women's fashion. Yes, ladies do cover up their "haute couture" designer gowns underneath their glittering abayas when they are outside, but the MAJORITY in the heart of the city DO NOT cover their heads. And when those ladies go inside some fancy restaurant or mall, the abayas come off and the fashion show begins. If one goes into the neighboring cities like Sharjah, or the smaller still Ras al-Khaymah, people are more religious and modest and women do tend to cover more, but Dubai is ANYTHING but extreme. It has sadly become a play-place for the ultra rich.

Hi Bob. You posted at #32 regarding my coment at #15. I'm pretty sure I got my facts correct. There was a January 2007 National Geographic article titled "Sudden City" about Dubai and its transformation over the years. It specifically talked about, among other things, the toll that the Palm Islands have taken on the ecosystem. Yes, they have increased the AREA of reef, but they have also done great damage to the natural coastal habitat. Don't take my word, check the article for yourself.
Jann Jun 22nd 2007 11:04AM
Bob, I didn't make a comment at #15. My first comment on this whole thing was at 67. But even if I misread the National Geographic article, how long will it take before all of the sewage and stuff that these new islands produce DOES do MORE damage to the man-made reef system it built? People in any country have to find a way to lessen their economic impact on the environment. Nuff said. I'm done.

DUBAI, ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PLACE IN THE WORLD! I REMEMBER WAY BACK 1997, I WAS THERE WORKING IN A JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL AS A BUTLER, THAT HOTEL IS 7 STAR AND IT IS A SPECTACULAR HOTEL AND RESORT, THE PRIINCESS ALWAYS THERE FOR A DAY USE. IT IS SOOOO RICH THAT UNITED STATES, ...... AND DUBAI IS THE EXCELLENT PLACE TO VISIT.... DON'T FORGET TO CHECK IN IN JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL IN JUMERAH BEACH. I AM PRETTY SURE YOU WILL HAVE THE BEST SERVICE THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET!!!!! AND THAT IS DUBAI!
steefje Jun 24th 2007 10:37AM
the few vertical beams ruin the whole concept. Doesn't look good anyway, just like most projects in dubai. Look like the city is turning in some kind of mid-eastern las vegas where all they're trying to do is impress people with their fancy decadent buildings.

There is much to address and lay off my spelling, I'm educated. This is America's world. We are the leader and the rest will have to follow. If they don't like it, tough. You'll get stomped and we will create civil war in your country until you are pre industrial.
Humans are a virus on the plant anyway. We are certainly increasing in size and using its resources up. For those idealists that want everyone to have the everything (or at least the essentials), you are effectively speeding up the increase in our population. Some people have to die. (preferably people in other countries before America), that way we will always be the strongest and able to crush any up risers. There won't be room for everyone here.
If any of us believe we know what's happening in the world, then you are silly. Those who are in power will always be in power, and they always have been. We are only allowed to know and believe what they give us. Open your minds and realize our political insignificance.
America + England + OPEC + Europe + Mexico + Canada.... = ROME. Everybody calm down....its all under control. Increasing fear among the populous is the most classic way to control a man's mind. So is religion (one should commune directly with GOD or Allah or whatever you call our creator, there is only one). Its not all about money....its all about control. Money is man's creation, and a great way to keep control of people.
We are going to over grow this planet one day. And I am happy being a common citizen among the masses. Why can't the rest of the world feel like me? (maybe because he sees his people starving (which if they follow us will get taken care of), or maybe he wants to drive the farrari too!?) Whatever the reason, the Middle east is going to have to sit down and be a good world citizen just like you and me.
The resources of the earth are our's, as humans, to use. America is the leader of humans in the world, (because we say so). If America says we NEED to control the oil and energy supplies across the world, then that's what is going to happen. That means get on the ship, or start communing with that creator of yours. Does that mean we are justified to misuse that resource? I shouldn't think so.
Some guys need to drive big trucks to do big jobs. But even that guy needs to decide what small changes he can make to help offset his impact on the planets resources. Its the responsible thing to do. We will need to find another planet, and we will need those resources to get there. I hope those who actually are in power can hear words similar to my own.
As for Dubai, America asked this place to be built. It is America that is building it. Not terrorists, you silly. You know the movie... "If you build it they will come" Is building a Vegas on steroids in the Middle of nowhere an irresponsible use of resources? or is it a brilliant plan to bring billions of dollars into a region that needs to be under control? Think bigger people.
We are taking the middle east, like it or not. We are happy to share and work along with anyone who is already there as long as they understand we are the leader. This didn't just all happen when planes flew into the towers. Rome has been fighting this war forever. Finally we are winning control away from the more irresponsible dissenting factions and hopefully by doing so avoid future conflicts with the ever increasing communist population of China.
I think even the best leaders need input. So it is great that we live in a society that allows our free expression, but all the radical extremists need to understand they are not driving the ship, and they will NEVER know the whole truth and reasons behind it all. Just look at the Kennedy family (Its was and is terribly sad that they had to take him out, the world just was and is not ready for their beautiful idealism.)
Peace in Middle East. Go USA. And my thanks to the men and women in uniform that provide my freedom and the chance to open my mind.
