The Cloud: A Dubai Resort in the Sky

Nadim Karam, a Lebanese architect, presented this resort-in-the-sky concept at the International Design Forum in Dubai last month. The actual resort will resemble a cloud floating 300 meters in the air, with slanting support beams that look like sheets of rain. Check out more pictures after the jump. [via]

Hey if you think this building is cool you need to go to this website-www.designboom.com It shows you all the new buildings Dubai is planning to build in the next 5 years. I looked at all of them and it's honestly mind-blowing how they can build some of these. Some of the buildings they show seem like there skyscrapers that are supposed to be made in the year 2100+. There so unimaginable!

The UAE is a fascinating part of the world - like a tiny laboratory for economic and political ideas, each emirate following its own distinct path, but all similar culturally. Nice to have an article looking at Dubai from a more local perspective
This is your opportunity to make a good living and a happy life.

All's I can say is that they must be doing something awfully right in Dubai...they seem to be so ahead of everyone else and everything seems so luxurious, is everyone in Dubai uber-rich???? As for this concept building...pretty awesome Dubai, another unique idea from a unique lil country...

More like a theme park attraction. But rain, even symbolic rain, is very important in the desert. Say, is Michael Jackson still planning on moving there?
Anita Oxenrider Jun 20th 2007 7:48AM
The folks in Dubai are uber-rich because of all the idiots in the USA who drive gas gusslers. Fill your tanks, and fill their pockets!
Robby Jun 20th 2007 8:02AM
Just what Dubai needs: a new target for terrorists. This is the kind of extragavance they despise. Cool idea though, in a perfect world.
Alex Crochet Jun 20th 2007 8:04AM
Anita...... First off let me say I do not drive a "gas gussler", Second take some of the money you save on gas and take a spelling class, it is spelled GUZZLER! Third if people want to spend their money on gas who are you to call them an idiot? If they don’t spend it on gas they will spend it on something else pointless, so why not drive a hummer? You can keep driving your hybrid but as soon as I can afford to drive a gas guzzling Ferrari I will defiantly do it!!! I also don’t care who gets my money because of it because I can afford it! It isn’t like you would be getting it anyway Mrs. Anita Gore hmmm has a ring don’t you think?
Kelly Jun 20th 2007 8:05AM
I think it looks very unique, but how in the world do you get up there? and is it stable? Looks like he is trying to create Heaven on earth.

But how much $$$$ is given to help with global issues? A resort in the clouds makes me smile and I applaud imagineering, but what about real problems back on earth: world health, education, human rights, poverty, war, environmental disasters etc.? Sometimes you also need to keep your feet on the ground and help solve issues that affect billions of people.
Raymond Jun 20th 2007 8:21AM
I think Kelly is probably right it must be a "Heaven on Earth" concept. Its amazing what you can do when you've got oil. We've got untapped oil reserves all over but thanks to the democrats we'll never get to use it till some other nation takes over America and makes us all subservient. Thats called "pie in the sky"---something, unfortunately that the democrats do believe in!
Rhonda Jun 20th 2007 8:28AM
Hmmmm, even though it looks pretty cool, it just doesn't fit surrounded by high rise buildings. And the supports? I'm not a structural engineer, but to me, it doesn't look like it's possible. But hey, you never know these days! All the power to them!!
Bobby Jun 20th 2007 8:39AM
Alex Crochet, french name of course. So you don't have a problem sending trillions of dollars, from oil revenues, to the middle east where it funds countries that are state sponsors of terrorism??? When the next terrorist attack comes, I hope you and your stinking ferrari are right in the middle of ground zero!
Smahtasz Jun 20th 2007 8:41AM
My friend just got back from Dubia in November and she said it was unbelievable and expensive! Her and her husband spent at least 500 a night for dinner :0
Well, if they do follow through with this hotel, then I just may brave the ME and go there just to see it!
Richie Jun 20th 2007 8:43AM
Imagine what they will build when gas reaches $8 a gallon or they are selling crude for $400 a barrel. Its nice that we support building super luxury resorts that 99% of Americans cannot afford to go to, in a middle eastern counrty that is a member of OPEC. You might know some of OPECs other members, Iran, Iraq, Lybia, Venezuela. Can you say Al Queda, terrorism, radical Islam, Anti-American.....I knew that you could. I am not saying dont buy gas, I am just saying this is some of what they do with thier seemingly endless supply of money.
Steven Jun 20th 2007 8:52AM
The hotel with the tennis courts is the Burj Al Arab. It's the tallest hotel in Dubai, the person who own's that hotel also owns the Wild Wadi Water park right next to it. Which is the ONLY water park that shoots you UP the water slides in an intertube.
The hotel is 1/4 mile off the shore on a man made island, and can only be toured by appointment. You can't just walk in and take a look like Vegas.
Also Dubai also opened the only indoor Ski/ Snowboard resort hotel just about a year ago. They do have very good ideas. Currently they are working on man made islands that when viewed from space it forms a shape of a palm tree. They are also working on a hotel that is under the water, that is accessible only by mini submarines.
They may be advanced and creative in the hotel industry but they are by far not that advanced in technology...

This latest 'engineering wonder" is another example of how this once sleepy-little-fishing village has squandered its resources on things that don't benefit its people. Look at the man-made "islands" it has built off its coasts and the utter destruction to the surounding reef ecosystem these "islands" have wrought. Look at the multi-million dollar beachfront home properties on these "islands' which none but the uber-rich can afford. Dubai has become a poster-child example of being blessed with a natural resource, and then wasting it on hedonistic pursuits to the detriment of its countrymen. It may be the "jewel of the Middle East", but for all the wrong reasons. What a shame.

Raymond, the democrats! Have you been in a time warp or what? Your current REPUBLICAN president, doesn't even want to address the gas prices, why? Let's see, isn't HIS family in the oil business? Seems strange to me, plus all he thinks about is the war in Iraq, which is headed for a civil war, remember in history? The kind of war WE had. The Middle Eastern culture does not like nor agrees with western culture, it never has. In others words.....they hate us, and by the way, don't give me the "you don't support our troops", I support any military branch that puts their life on the line, I just don't support the republican decision, and if you READ, most of the republicans don't either. The lobbyist has a big part on what political decisions, and they donate plenty of money to political candidates. The republicans count on this money and they listen to lobbyist that is why the U.S. hasn't done anything in the last 20 years on alternatives for fuel. Stop being an idiot! Voting republican because your parents were republican and you always been one.
