Video: 747 Makes a Very, Very Low Landing
Here's a video for the "I Need New Pants" file. It's a KLM 747 making an extremely low landing at an airport in St. Maarten. I love how everyone on the beach is transfixed by the giant flying object hurtling towards them. Me? I'd be the guy ducking for cover and screaming like a little girl.
I'm not one to doubt the usually reputable content on The YouTube, but can this possibly be real? Judge for yourself; check out a video of another St. Maarten landing after the jump.

The two videos are of the same landing; see the red car just passing by. The view point is just different.

It's a legitimate video. I've been on a plane landing in St. Marten. It's also a "I need new pants" experience.

If you listen, you can hear the pilot throttle up once, then I'm pretty certain a second time right before the nose of the plane reaches the beach. I'd bet that pilot needed new pants too -- imagine the view they get. Actually, no need to imagine -- there's a cockpit view of a landing on this runway at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksmDuXO_k6E -- of course, this one's a far better landing.

Thanks for the confirmation, Aisha.
Greg, thanks for the video. I wondered how it looked from that angle.

I recently returned and I thought our guide said there was an accident recently and that area of the beach is now fenced off....or I could be dreaming. Anyone know?

This is real. It was on Ripley's Believe It or Not the TV show a few years back. One of those things were you try to spot the fake. It is real, however due to safety and security concerns, they said the area had been fenced off.

This is absolutely real. I have been there and have filmed a couple landings myself. The end of the runway is fenced off; however the beach itself is not. In fact, there are some bars cemented in the sand just so you can stand there and hold on while jets are landing and taking off!! The Sunset Beach Bar is adjacent to this beach and they have conversations with the pilots of approaching aircraft being held with the tower on loudspeaker.
