Surfing in Pohnpei, Micronesia
By the looks of this You Tube video, "Rip Curl My Search," Pohnpei, Micronesia is one wow of a place to surf. Besides the totally awesome surfing moves by Pancho Sullivan, Raoni Monteiro, Darren O'Rafferty and Kieren Perrow that make you feel like you're there, the video includes some island and fish images. If you're interested in heading to Pohnpei, here is a link to the Pohnpei Surf Club. Make sure you look at the gallery page. The photos are gorgeous.

Unreal, is all I have to say. I actually lived on Pohnpei for a year and surfed several times a month. We probably surfed Palikir pass 30 times that year and I never saw it like this. The waves did get that big but never that clean. A typical day there was more like 3-5 ft. Though, if you were good you could be barrelled like those guys on a regular basis. I am sad that the island is getting so popular for surfing now. I was there in 2002. Before Surfing magazine turned it into a hot spot. And that dumb surf camp at Misko Beach. I know that they were fighting it hard to keep them from starting that camp when I was there. I can only count one time the whole year where there was more than just me and my friends surfing at Palikir. I hear that when the surf is going now that it is just packed. Way to go to the idiots that decided it would be a good time to share the South Pacific's best kept secret with the surfing world. The only good thing I guess is that it is wicked expensive to get there so the only people you will see out there are pros and mega rich people. Oh well, Palikir was nice while it lasted all of those years.

I was there in 97' and have the same feelings about it now. A jewel that was lost for the sake of one article in a magazine. The surf media should see that they are doing the surfing world a disservice by revealing the last remaining unexploited areas in that way. It may have made sense in the 60's when there was so much left to explore, but in this day and age, in the era of the surf camp and the package deal, all it does is take a pristine place and turn it into a glorified amusement park ride. Places like Pohnpei are always there for a surfer with just a little imagination and sense of adventure to find. Now its just another place crowded with people who never would have gone there and searched it out for themselves.

Hello there guys, I saw you video or whatever you call it, I must say I am very surprised when I saw this video. It is very saddening for me as a real Pohnpeian. But, again I want to congraduate everyone of you and piece of advise when your promoting the surfing back in Pohnpei, Please always say Iheng! Whoever or anybody coming to our islands to respect and trespasses must always say the Magic Humble word(Iheng!) you gentlemen are so fortunate you came back in one piece. you must be blessed by the gods or have connection with Pohnpei meaning (Upon Sacred Alter) if you never heard of this. again, keep in touch and Kalahngan oh Kaselehlie.

Hi Hannah,
I checked the You Tube posting and it lists The Beautiful Girls - On a Clear Day as the song. I like it too.
