Afraid to Fly? Bring Your MP3 Player
Perhaps you've heard stories of people who will take incredibly long train rides to avoid getting on an airplane, or know people who don't travel more than a couple hundred miles because of their fear of flying. I know two people who are like that.
There's help though. I came across a round-up article that presents some options, a couple you can add to your music mix on your MP3 player. The style and prices vary.
One download, Fear of Flying at www.meditainment.com has a visualization, deep breathing exercise that is designed to mentally transport you to a calmer place. Instead of sweating bullets in your plane seat, you can picture yourself on a tropical island.
Another, Psychology of Flight Anxiety offered at www.iamplify.com uses down-to-earth talk therapy and anecdotes to help an anxious flyer to feel grounded. You can purchase the whole series, or just sections of it.
Fear of Flying Help Course (www.fearofflyinghelp.com) gives practical, how-to-tips on how to not feel fearful and anxiety ridden.
The bummer about these solutions is that you can't use an MP3 player during take-off and landing. I guess you listen to as much as you can before take off and landing so that when you do have to switch off the voices, you'll still hear them.

To give you a little background, I (JP Richards) was in my second year of a debilitating fear of flying, when I discovered this powerful technique that stopped my fear of flying in it’s tracks.
You see, I had to fly because my best client bought me a ticket to Columbus, Ohio for a company meeting and training. Before I could get out of the meeting and say “no” to flying, the client had bought me a airplane ticket, and I was stuck facing my fear of flying or possibly losing my best client.
So I did what most people do as a last resort… I went to see a certified Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner.
And guess what?
Within 30 minutes of working with him, I could imagine flying to Columbus withOUT my knees getting weak, my breathing getting shallow, or my stomach getting queasy.
I have a 18 minute cure to fear of flying called GoGetter JetSetter.
If you post on this site about curing yourself of a fear of flying, I'll give you the GoGetter JetSetter program for FREE (a $49 value).

JP Richards,
I have been trying to reach you since I purchased your GoGetter JetSetter Program on May 1st. Your website states you have a money-back guarantee. Your program did not work for me. I want a refund. Every email I can find for you is not working or invalid. Are you a fraud? I have filed a complaint with PayPal and the BBB of Canada. I would like my money back.

Just rock some "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins. That'll help, haha.

"Instead of sweating bullets in your plane seat, you can picture yourself on a tropical island"
But I HATE tropical islands. The worst kinds of vacations I've had were tagging along on a supposedly "relaxing" vacation to such places - and I nearly died of boredom. I can't stand doing nothing. If you want to lie around sleeping on the sand in the sun, you can do it without me. Picturing myself on a tropical island is a nightmare for me. I need to be doing, learning, seeing, and being entertained. Vegging out is a waste of time, I can do that when I actually NEED to sleep at times when I should be sleeping.
The world needs to stop using this "tropical island" imagery as the standard idea for a relaxing, soothing time - cos it's not. What if you're there by yourself and you're stranded?

K, I think you may be the only person who finds tropical islands non-relaxing.

I can sometimes be a bit nervous in the middle of flights, and my iPod has helped me quite a bit. It almost makes time go faster. I listen to my favorite album, and usually about 4 or 5 songs into it, we're ready to land and the flight is almost over.
Regarding "tropical island" imagery. Most of us are always "moving, going, doing" in our daily lives. The idea that one can truly stop and relax and enjoy the moment is what is most appealing to me in a tropical island vacation.
I've been on several beach trips where people are so concerned with what was happening when and what the daily plan was, that it stopped feeling relaxing and became a headache. My ideal vacation is "doing nothing."
