It sure is a great route. The overlook at the top of the switchbacks north of Mono Lake is my favourite pull-out on the road. 395 is third on my list of great routes in the US (from a Brit's perpective) behind US550 through the San Juans in Colorado and Utah State Highway 12 through the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument.
