Inexpensive Ways to Safeguard Your Travel Gear

Safeguarding travel gear on the road can be a challenge. Not only can it be expensive, it can also be paranoia-inducing (Is that guy gonna steal my bag?! Why did she just brush up against me?!).

In an attempt to alleviate some of the financial and emotional strain of protecting your stuff, Ubertramp has assembled some nifty, thrifty ways to protect your gear while on the go, including details on how to:

  1. waterproof your backpack.
  2. secure your backpack.
  3. carry valuables.
  4. carry toiletries.
  5. carry documents.

In general, I agree with the tips — especially those involving using plastic bags and Tupperware containers! I love compartmentalized storage! — though I’d argue that lining the inside of a backpack with a fertilizer bag might be roughing it just for the sake of roughing it.

In Africa, I used to wrap “groups of clothing” together in individual bags (shorts in this one; shirts in that) to protect against rain and/or dust. It might seem cumbersome, but it’s easy to unpack swiftly, removing chunks of items at once — all of which remain neatly folded — as opposed to grabbing individual items in sequence.
