It's certainly possible for Americans to eat quickly and efficiently with chopsticks. I'm an American and do so on a regular basis.
My wife, who is not even a Chinese-American, can do the same. It just takes a proper lesson or two and then ample practice. Eventually you'll be able to pick up marbles with plastic chopsticks, no problem.
