The Future of Taxis in New York

CNET has an interesting photo gallery, "Rethinking New York's taxis," which showcases design concepts and prototypes of yellow cabs of the future. The showcase was put together by the Design Trust for Public Space to celebrate the New York City Taxi's 100th anniversary.

Some of the designs feature natural gas-powered engines and wheelchair/scooter ramps, but perhaps most interesting is the new signage concept which visually broadcasts where the taxi is headed, and whether or not the occupant is interested in a ride share. Presumably, you'd be able to save some cash by offering the cab up to others on the street if they're headed in your direction. Nifty.

The cab pictured above is just for fun. It was "tricked out" by Ride Magazine to celebrate the most popular taxi model: the Crown Vic.
