Get your Geek on: Wired Magazine's Best Geek Cities
Are you a geek and seek out your own kind when traveling across America? Well you're in luck. Wired Magazine has rated America's geekiest towns based on a complicated formula involving, among other factors, proximity to engineering schools, availability of free Wi-Fi, personal ads posted on Geek 2 Geek, and comic book stores per capita.
The magazine doesn't go so far as to call out the geekiest city in all of America, but it does list the top ten;
Seattle
San Francisco
Los Angeles
Austin
Orlando
Raleigh-Durham
Pittsburgh
New York City
Boston
Washington DC

WHAT?? No mention of the heart of geek-dom, Silicon Valley? (Milpitas would be perfect, but I'll settle for San Jose....) And I suppose we should give equal geek-time to Hwy 128 in Massachusetts....

it's not a very dependable list because it's based on sheer numbers. of course the bigger cities are going to be at the top of the list. los angeles a geeky city? give me a break!!

Does that make me Ms. Geek since I have lived in half of the cities listed? I love these places!

Surely other factors in the complicated formula for geekiness include: boring ugly women, boring ugly men, 0% charisma. I bet Raleigh-Durham is number one in geekiness!

well here is an over complicated formula that didnt work again. Everybody knows that Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the geek capital of the world.

I currently live in Albany, New York. Which has it's share of geeks. But Sioux Falls, South Dakota-formerly a two horse town- is rapidly becoming Geekville, U.S.A. The women aren't geeks, but a good portion of them have beer bellys and moustaches.

you forgot LosAlamos, the truly geekiest city anywhere
Becky Mar 2nd 2007 7:24PM
How can they calculate the geekiness a city is by the number of Circuit City stores there are? Why not calculate by the number of computer parts stores instead?
Margaret Mar 2nd 2007 7:24PM
Seattle geeky?????
Just because we have Microsoft, perhaps that is why we are perceived as having a 'geeky' persona?
Well.....Wronggggg!
Seattle is a lively, outgoing city with beautiful people, in spite of the winter weather.
So much to do and see - so little time......off I go....
The 'geek' formula is in error in Seattle's case.
For shame!
But on the other hand, perhaps people will not move here and stay here if we meet the 'geeky' criteria....Mmmmmmmm!

Apparently no one involved in this survey has seen the folks in southern Indiana!

Angela: Hmmmmmm....The hunks I date disagree with you. You Tarheads take your sports entirely too seriously. Incidentally, my team is No. 1 in the nation.
