What Is the Most Annoying Airplane Etiquette Violation?
Cheapflights recently ran a poll on airplane etiquette. Asking the question, "Which of the following airplane etiquette violators do you find most offensive?" the results aren't too surprising:
- Incessant talker
- Rapid recliner
- Armrest hog
I'm surprised the person who uses their cell phone right up until the very last second (and then powers up the instant the plane lands) didn't rank higher. Maybe that one struck a little too close to home for most of Cheapflights' users.

To the "customer service" agent, it sounds as if you need a new job!

As a large person I do try to be polite (do the "right" thing as some one else put it) and purchase an extra seat so as not to crowd in on anyone's space, I can fit into one seat but for my sake and my neighbors i would rather pay the additional fee. On one flight my intoxicated neighbor invited his "new" girlfriend he met in the bar at the airport to sit in the extra seat I paid for. He asked "you dont mind if she sits here do you? I said well it is awful crowded and i DID pay extra for that seat. he said She wont mind. and she sat her drunk butt down and they went to town every comment was loud and crudely sexual. I had 5 hours of hearing about the details of their sexual fantasies and then they wanted to join the mile high club right then and there,,, the stewardesses did nothing, and the people in front of us were higbly annoyed as well,, the woman got sick and puked,,,, they were stone cold drunk even BEFORE they boarded the plane,,, a rotten trip for me,,, i was ticked because i had an uninvited drunk prostitute sitting in a seat i paid for so i wouldnt inconveinence anyone,, sometimes even when you try to do the right thing it still goes terribly terribly wrong :/

The most annoying of all are the flight attendants who act like they are handing out gold to the coach passengers when they toss the pretzels at us. Their smarmy attitudes towards the passengers is getting old. We paid ridiculously high prices for our tickets and the least the attendants can do is hand off a bag of pretzels and a Coke with a smile. It is not our fault they have issues with their employer. We all have issues. I don't want to hear theirs.

while i can't stand it ANYWHERE, gum popping on a plane (where there's NO ESCAPING) drives me to want to strangle someone!!! thank god for i pods!

"Allowing free (seat aailable)travel to employees and their families"
Why is this a problem to you? Should we tell you that you may not use your company benefits? Do you take the mileage off when you use the company car to go out for the evening? Or a short trip to the store?
We are only allowed on if there is empty seats, and if someone with a ticket on a later flight wants on the earlier one, and we are trying to get on, then the passenger gets the seat. And they are not always "free" seats. We pay a fee/and or taxes on some flights.

i also dislike the cramped leg room, people that set their chairs back, small restrooms.

My biggest complaint is with the airlines. When you book a flight for your family, they seat you seperatly and then you have to fight with them to get your seats re-assigned to sit together. AND it doesn't matter how far in advance you purchase them.

I think the folks who must recline their seats to the maximum are selfish and rude. When I try to read a book, they actually block the reading light. And then when they go the the restroom, they don't have a thought about putting their seat upright until they return. It's amazing how many people think the world revolves around them. I rarely recline my seat, but when I do it's an inch or two. I realize the space behind my seat belongs to someone else.

Crabby kids don't bother me after all they are just kids and most parents are doing their best, remember babies don't understand plane etiquette. Its crabby adults, rude inconsiderate of others, so long as i'm ok f*** everyone else sorts. But especially the gas passers or toilet blockers for f**** sake do it before you get on and take a beano.

To #114, you should care about their issues because the reason they have problems w/their employers is a result of the public not wanting to pay a fair price for a ticket. As I mentioned before, some of the low fares airlines have been forced to implement just to stay in the game, have created financial struggles and bankruptcy. Yes it is expensive to fly but that is because you are flying not riding on a bus or train. If you don't want to pay for the actual cost of a flight - fuel, equipment, labor, etc. - don't fly.

To all the people who mentioned children "too young to fly," exactly what age would that be - and who made you the judge of it? Children have as much right to be on that plane as you do, airplanes are not the privileged domain of adults. As a parent who works hard to make sure my 3-year old is not climbing on her seat, holding the headrest of the person in front of her, kicking the seat, talking too loudly or engaging in any potentially annoying behavior, I totally get that many parents could do a better job of minding their children and not treating the whole plane like a playground. But I also remember traveling when my daughter was an infant. Thankfully although we traveled often she only got ear pain once. Dealing with the fact that my child was in pain was bad enough, but it was compounded by the glares of selfish a--holes who acted as though I was somehow able to control the fact that the plane was DESCENDING and her ears were popping - yes, that was TOTALLY my fault. Get over yourself and realize the difference between an inattentive parent and one dealing with a difficult situation. Get an iPod - or better yet, charter a jet, if you're so important.

The worst airline behavior I've experienced was when I was a third wheel in a 3 seat row. I shared the row with a Cajun couple headed from Detroit to New Orleans, (pre Katrina). We were stuck on the runway for 5 hours due to snow and icing while these two 40 something Cajun speaking lovebirds engaged in an R rated makeout session not completely contained in their 2 seats for the last 3 hours and continued it throughout the flight--all I can say is "gag me".

Like other people have said, you get what you pay for. Everyone wants to fly across the US for less than the price of a pair of sneakers. The cost to fly the planes are a fixed cost, guess what, cram them in like cattle.

The thing I hate the most is the carry on luggage. Love it or hate it, the airlines dont do a bad job overall with baggage.
People carry suitcases on board, then have the audacity to slow down the entire plain from boarding or deboarding. I also can not imagine it is safe for the occupants of a plane, especially in an emergency. These excessive carryons people board with can become dangerous airborn items!
It is rude for people to make others wait for them while they try and unstuff huge bags from the overhead compartment. These people that travel like this inconvenience others to their own benefit, and the airlines need to stop it.

The problem with flying lies in the people. We all know the rules - carry on needs to fit in the overhead bin. This does not mean bring the LARGEST bag you have. There is a reason it's called carry-on. If you can't lift it - shouldn't have brought it. Also, this carry-on goes in YOUR overhead, the one above YOUR seat!! Showering and deoderant are not optional, you MUST do this before boarding. When you go through security - yes, you should know by now what you can and cannot bring. Don't be the pain in the _ _ _ that thinks they can scam it through then get caught and hold the rest of us up.
