Bizarre (and Upscale) Theme Hotels

Theme hotels with kitschy decorated rooms tend to be kitschy themselves. But now there is a new twist on the theme hotel: luxury.

Investors in western Connecticut are betting that upscale clientele visiting the region for skiing are willing to pay up to $2,000 a night for the pleasure of sleeping in a bizarre room. And bizarre they are.

The newly built Winvian is a collection of 18 cabins each of which is stranger than the last and all of which, according to Stephanie Simon writing for the LA Times, are "luxurious, whimsical, spooky, stunning and flat-out startling."

Each cabin has its own theme and is utterly unique. Guests can stay in one that looks like a beaver den, a tree house, tomb, helicopter, medieval court, stable, outdoor forest, and more. And according to the LA Times article and photos on the resort's web site, it ain't cheesy (although the helicopter theme might be a bit too much unless you have kids).
