HBO in the Air
Here's a dose of good news for the folks who are tired of the mostly family-oriented fare that you see during in-flight movies when you travel. Starting in May, if you fly Delta Airlines, you will be able to watch 'Deadwood,' 'The Sopranos,' The Wire' and a whole assortment of other more adult-oriented entertainment. An agreement between Delta Air Lines and HBO will put the channel's programming in the rather revolutionary video-on-demand seat backs and will make some 40 to 50 hours of unedited programming available to fliers. Of course, it ain't gonna be free...unless, of course, you are flying Business Class. No, domestic economy-class customers will be charged $5 for a feature film and $2 an episode for TV shows. I suppose that's not too bad to catch up on what is happening in the old West and just haven't had your daily fill of Al Swearengen saying the f-word.

Hallelujah! As long as kids aren't unintentionally included as viewers, I am FOR this. I am sooo tired of the lame kiddie films shown on airlines!

I don't think this is right at all. This isn't a private place to view these adult oriented shows..it's a public plane. There will be children and people that just don't care to be exposed to these types of shows. Isn't it bad enough that every store we walk into has a near naked woman on the cover..now we have to be stuck on a plane w/naked women degrating themselves on a pole as well. Get a clue airlines. You don't subject us to other peoples smoke and you shouldn't subject us to other peoples ideas of entertainment.

I concur! Nothing worse than being stuck on a plane with boring kid films. I bring magazines and books and there are those that bring ipods etc. But it looks like Delta is thinking ahead. It would be nice to feel like a grownup.

Kiddie movies??? I have traveled from CA to FL and back 16 times and there have been PLENTY of movies that I wouldn't let my kids listen to.

Addendum: If a person was travelling alone, and was surrounded by kids or squeamish adults, it might cause a problem. In that case it would be up to the ADULT to exercise discretion, and manners before making the choice to see adult programming. People are still be raised with manners and can communicate. However, if the screen is directly in front of a person on the seat back, how rude is it for a person sitting next to someone, behind, or in front of someone, to want to dictate what the first person should see? Having the choice is what makes it controllable. People would have to pay for this entertainment.

IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE? CAN I TAKE MY GRANDCHILDREN ON A PLANE WITHOUT THEM BEING EXPOSED TO SUCH JUNK? GOES THE SAME TRAIL AS NO PRAYER, NO "IN GOD WE TRUST" AND ON AND ON--LETS BRING OUR COUNTRY BACK TO OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

As an adult, I think adults should have the option. However, as a parent, I don't think they should be shown. Yes, some adults may find "family" movies lame. However, be the adult and suck it up. Bring a book, magazine, music or something.
Children should not be watching these programs. I would hope that the adults around them would use discretion. However, I wouldn't want to count on it.

not paying for it .................

How can you even consider that on a plane for gosh sakes. I mean the flights are not long so can they not wait till they are in a private place for that If this happens then what is next? IO am no prude AT ALL believe me but sheesh this is way out of line in my opinion.

It's an airline flight, for heaven's sake! If you can't do without "adult" entertainment for a few hours you have a serious problem. Get a life. Read a book. Use your imagination and daydream. It's not the responsibility of the airline to provide air traveler's with "adult" fare. They are supposed to get us from one place to the other quickly and safely, with a minimum of inconvenience.

I know it's not PC to say this, but I'll say it anyways. As long as the movies or shows are viewed with headphones on so the language isn't broadcast throughout the plane, I think it's a pretty good idea. I would love to have the option to view a show I want to see as opposed to the lame movies generally shown. No, I would not watch something like Deadwood or The Sopranos if there were a child in close proximity, but I watch these shows at home, and I have a child. I simply use discretion as to when I view them. This country has become so overwhelmingly PC about everything that I get a headache just thinking about it.

Very Poor Taste. Now the rest of the air carriers will follow. Each time one carrier does something stupid the rest follow suit. Do you want to be known as "The No Class Airline"?
Judy Feb 24th 2007 10:23PM
As long as there is no nudity or violence worse than what is currently being shown on airline flights, what is the issue here? As someone who has taken many hundreds of flights, reading a book or listening to music just does not cut it all of the time - especially on long flights. If the only culprit is adult language, no one but the subscriber would be able to hear it anyway. I find it pathetic for people to say "get a life" when it is those very same people who have no life to speak of. People like that seem to live to complain just for the sake of complaining.

there is no need to cater to someone that cant take a 3-4 hour plane ride without the option to watch tony soprano getting oral from a stripper, or seeing nudity on a plane ride, charge smokers another $5.00 for a smoking area on flights longer than 2 hours, seems that is more offensive then nudity, the movies i have seen on a plane have generally been "pg", not "g" like curious george or anything, bring your laptop, read a book or deal with the movie, the cost will effectivly go to all passengers on the plane to cater to perverts
Jim B Feb 24th 2007 10:32PM
I will stop flying Delta if they decide to do this. It is totally uncessary to add problems to flights instead of trying to solve problems. There are many adults including myself who would prefer not to see this stuff and damn sure don't want to have in front of me because some idiot sitting next to me has to have his/her fix of nudity, foul language, or whatever. jb
tim boyett Feb 24th 2007 10:55PM
oh no a movie kids see prostitutes on the side of the rode go to public beaches and believe me schools arent full of polite children who do no wrong if you take a child on a plane that could crash any second or get highjacked by terrorist is a movie going to realy hurt that much .
Jon Feb 24th 2007 10:44PM
You tired ass Jesus freak douche bags make me sick. If you don't want your kids subjected to harsh material then PARENT THEM. It is not Delta's job to parent your child and it is NOT MY JOB to parent your child. By the way, did anyone actually read this article before they made comments? It does not say anything about porn and the shows won't be played throughout the cabin, it is for individual purchase and viewing. Plus, you'll have headphones. Your little spawn won't be able to hear any swearing.
Danny Feb 24th 2007 10:45PM
I am all for it, I travel all over the world and get tired of kiddie films for 20 hours.
Lynn Feb 24th 2007 10:47PM
This is crazy to even consider it. I am a Flight Attendant, and the problems I see if this is started are unbelieveable. What are you going to do, if the adult passenger wants to watch this show and you have a child sitting next to you because the row with his parents is full with other sibling and the plane it is full?
What is this type of entertainment going to promote with a passenger sitting there having "another" drink, to match the ones he had in the bar before he got on the plane and then you add sex and violence to the mix? Again, it is only a few hours at most on any state side flight, read, take a nap, place a game on the computer, listen to you Ipod, these shows are not needed on the plane.
Sandy Feb 24th 2007 10:51PM
I have flown all over the world...45 minute flights, 16 hour flights, and everything in between! I have never...not once...seen a children's movie on a flight! Where did "lame" come from?? These are the same movies you see at the theater...before they are even released on DVD! Are they "lame" because they are edited and have the sex, nudity, and language removed?? I for one, would demand my seat be changed should any perverted person sitting next to me decide to watch anything with sexual situations and/or nudity! I would hate to see the trey rise...and have a drink spill all over me! Anyone who is for this is a pathetic perverted loser who needs to get serious help.
