Second Life as Virtual Tourism

It seems like everyone is jumping on the Second Life bandwagon these days. Sweden opened an official embassy there, avatars are organized to march for peace, big name companies like American Apparel, Reuters, and Pontiac have setup virtual real estate as a means for reaching a new audience, and heck, we’ve even got a blog in our family dedicated to covering nothing but Second Life, which is where I found this article from Wired about MTV’s new virtual reality presence.

MTV has created a virtual chunk of California’s Laguna Beach to promote their show of the same name, and a reported 300,000 in-game users have visited the site since it’s opening just over 10 weeks ago. Live on the other side of the world? Don’t feel like flying to California? Just get a Second Life account and zap yourself to the beach.

You’ll just have to try and ignore the fact that you’re still sitting behind a computer in Montana, staring through a monitor at a poorly rendered version of Southern California created by MTV. But hey, it’s *almost* like the real thing!
