Quiz: How Well-Traveled Are You?
Since last week's quiz went over so well, we figured we'd hit you with another one. It was fantastic for us to see how much you all got into the Conde Nast quiz and article and it was fun to read all of the feedback on how accurate the quiz was in terms of your travel personality.
This one is a little more cut and dried, but no less fun. Check it out via blogthings and tell us in the comments: How Well-Traveled Are You?

Well I didn't score very well. However, I'm going to be defensive about it. I didn't score well because many of the places I've been to aren't on the list. Anybody who tries to avoid touristy destinations won't do so hot either. Unless you count layovers.

I agree. I was disappointed by the quiz because it only considered cities. If you visit rural areas or national parks they don't count.

According to this, I have never been to Africa, even though I lived two years in Nigeria and one year in Libya.
Your people writing this don't know very much geography, they usually mention cities, mentioning two which are 60 miles apart in the Middle East, and missing most of the area. They miss Singapore and include one entire island Sumatria. They should look at a map of the world before coming up with any more quizzes.

I enjoyed the quiz, but was surprised you didn't include Jerusalem or Tel Aviv as a Middle Eastern travel spot. Israel is a very popular destination for many Americans and a great experience.

you don't even have Wellington on the NZ part. that's the capitol! and it's Rotorua, not Rotura. cool quiz though, pretty much agree w/what i got. just gotta stick up for my nz :)

You have to be kidding me. You didn't include huge numbers of major cities, let alone smaller areas, and you expect to give an accurate overview of how well travelled someone is?

This is a rather crude quiz. Spending some time, say a week in Turkey and briefly visiting a city like Istanbul, is not the same as traveling extensively. For example, there are only four places in Africa mentioned in the quiz. Yet I have traveled through Southern Africa extensively over many years - South Africa in particular - the cities of Pretoria (the capital), Johannesburg, Durban, are not even mentioned, only Cape Town. I have also been to Zimbabwe three times (not recently I hasten to add!) and one each to Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia. Not mentioned. Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean islands where I once spent three weeks, is, like all the other islands there, not even mentioned. I have visited-a month each - Australia and New Zealand, but only once, but have a lot of experience in the UK and Europe. Because of the cities mentioned in the Antipodes I am deemed by the quiz to have traveled there extensively. Not so. The quiz skews the reality.

I was considered well traveled in most areas. The problem with the quiz is that there is no block to check for "In the Military." 80% of the places I have traveled to were because of the military and 80% of those we were not allowed to freely travel and most we were not even acknowlegded or welcomed. I would not be well traveled had it not been for this loop hole. I didn't travel for culture, education or pleasure, I went for business

Also one place I did goof off was in Germany. We had three weeks down time before our flight back so a friend and I took the best rip of our lives. We packed our military ruck sacks with a change of clothes, shaving kit, sleeping bag and hit the rural areas on foot. We spent 16 days walking the back country and seeing places that most never do. The people treated us great, some taking us in and feeding us. They didn't have the normal view of the military that those who lived near the bases had. This is the vacation I would suggest to anyone heading some place like this. Get away from the loud obnoxious tourists and most important, stay away from anywhere celebrities visit.

Turkey is actually in Europe...not the Middle East which your quiz puts the capital city Istanbul in. If Turkey, was in the middle east it wouldn't be eligible for EU membership but it is cause its in Europe. Try buying a map or something
Skook Jan 28th 2007 8:11AM
How about YOU buying a map... only a small part of Turkey is in Europe... the rest is in Asia. And Istanbul is NOT the capital, Ankara is, which is in the Asian part. And Cyprus is a member of the EU, but it is nowhere near Europe.

The quiz doesn't make sense. I've traveled to Panama four times, Ecuador twice and Honduras once, yet according to the quiz I have not traveled in Latin America. Next time, if you are going to have a quiz, have it make a bit of sense.

Let's see... Krakow, L'viv, Chiesnau, Zagreb, Addis Abba, Marakesh, Fukouoa, Guam, Honolulu, San Juan, Kuwait City, Nuremberg, ...

This reminds me of a political poll that is shaped to give a specific response rather than a true cross section of opinion. I've traveled in every state in the South except Florida, but since the only southern cities included are Atlanta and ones in Florida, I scored poorly. Where's Birmingham, Charleston, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, Savannah, etc. GET REAL!!!!
Sara Jan 28th 2007 10:41AM
This wasn't very accurate. I spent weeks in England and took a day trip almost everyday. According to this, I've only been to London.
John Jan 28th 2007 6:33PM
Skook needs to go back to school. He is confusing ancient continent designations based on geographical features with political/economic regions which are the real world. Turkey has less in common with the "political" Middle East than it does with Europe. It is a NATO and EU member because it is considered to be a European style country. Cyprus is also very much in the European political/economic region.

I agree with some other comments. It says I am untraveled in places I have traveled in because I didn't hit a particular city. Maybe they should have used country names or something rather than big cities. It seems like it was written more for business rather than adventure traveler.

I achieved 100% for US and Canada, 93% for most except dropped to 89% for SoPacific area...guess I've got to keep going, but if I go to Laos this year it makes 160 countries I've visited to datel. I've been to Tomboctou, Mali, Nambibia, Yemen & Saudi Arabia as tourist in all cases. Jack
Sofia Jan 28th 2007 2:26PM
LOL. I'm from Central America and this said I was untravelled in Latin America. Not to mention that you didn't include Salvador, Brazil- a top destination.
