Polo's Bastards Top 10 Worst Destinations
With the current conflict going on between Ethiopia and Somalia, my mind immediately began to wonder what the writers at Polo's Bastards had been up to and what dangerous lands they've been exploring. Last time I checked in they'd just posted a piece on Rio's favelas. Since then North Korea and Chechnya have also made their blog pages. To round off the year though, Lee Ridley spent a little bit of his Christmas day highlighting some of the world's worst destinations in 2006. Iraq assumes the position of No. 1, which doesn't come as a shocker at all. The conflict created by the Hezbollah kidnappings of Israeli soldiers earned Lebanon the No. 10 spot, and in the middle you'll find Haiti, Afghanistan, the entire Horn of Africa (poor Eritrea), Nepal, Chad, Chechnya and North Korea. If you've been in the dark concerning the political climate of these particular areas, you might want to mosey over and see what the deal is. Otherwise, just be sure to proceed with caution in the upcoming year. It is a far, far more dangerous world out there.

I liked New Zealand too. In New Zealand they have tours you can take to Antarctica. Thats pretty far. Thats like going from here to Hawaii. I live in Seattle, and in the summer it's a great place to live. In the winter, it doesn't get terribly cold. It does rain alot however, for about 4-5 months a year. That is, unless you are form California. If you are, don't ever come here, because it is the worst place ever.

Visited Cleveland for Christmas and can't say that Cleveland Rocks. So much reminded me of the Great Lakes, Midwest States, like my native Minneapolis. They seemed more lax on litter. Some of the suburbs looked chopped up by newer freeway bypasses. Saw Cleveland policemen pulling people over and they seemed more on guard for trouble than Minnesota cops. People were not overly nice or pretending to be friendly for business purposes. They didn't have mega-casinos. Charming old buildings stood next to efficient, but soul-less, new buildings and there was no attempt to make them blend.

Atlanta is the only place I've ever been in this country that is a bigger shit hole than Phoenix. Guam sucked, but it's not technically in the US.

I live an hour out of Atlanta, and I agree with Jack: Atlanta sucks. The worst thing about is is the traffic flow, but that's for another column. As for the gist of the article...there are so many things to see and do in your own country, even within your own state/province, why would you want to spend that much money to travel overseas? I personally don't plan to go any further than I have to except for business and of course, my upcoming honeymoon. Don't get me wrong, I want to see the Great Pyramid, but the Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville, GA are just as facinating to me.

Hey Jack #15--I live in ATL, and you got it exactly right.

A man tried to rob me in NY, I've been assaulted in Columbus, OH; assaulted by a police officer in Pennsylvania, I've had 5 cars stolen in the past 10 years in the US, My apartment in Michigan was broken into twice....I've lived peacefully and safely on an island in Micronesia; my homes in Europe are safe and secure, the police here in Europe would never lay a hand on me for no reason, not because I am an american but because such things are not done by civilised people. The US is comprised of all the people of the world who were outcasrs and undesireables of their own countries. The US has been a penal colony by the English and the French, a place to ship religious fanatics and the insane, a destination for Africa's people who were too slow or stupid to escape from the slavers. It is not a place, given its history of atrocities, to be proud of.

I went to Mexico and I was framed by the police there. They came up to my friend and I and said they wanted to do a search. After searching both of us (and my friend and I thinking we would go away scott free) one of the police officers stuck a black rolled up looking peice of wrapping paper in my pocket and said he found "marijuana." He then proceeded to arrest us. This little jerk and his pig buddy only did this so we could try and bribe our way out of it or else we would have to pay a 300 dollar fine and spend three days and jail. We each gave the bastard 20 dollars and he let us go.

I found CUBA to be utterly fascinating, even more so than Mexico, Hawaii, Spain...Havana is an awesome city...it's old,, historic, and what's more, is unchanged -- I love that "old world" flavor to it. Wonderfully hot, sultry weather. In addition, you'll find the friendliest people in the world, bar none! It's so unlike other places. I've visited Cuba 3 times in 3 years. Safe? Totally. Crime? there isn't any. Scary militarists/police? Nope. Would I return: Most definitely.

I have traveled 32 states here and been to 9 foreign countries. I love everything I have seen in the US but to see foreign countries is an experience everyone should have. People in foreign countries are friendly and helpful. To see history from many years ago, to rub elbows and have beer with the locals in pubs and play darts etc. is such fun. If you go to Europe for the first time, go to Vienna. It is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been in. I will be seeing Italy & Greece this summer.

I'm actually rather envious of most of you! I'm one of those poverty-stricken po' folk and besides traveling from MD to FL because I lost my home and had to move; I haven't had the luxury to travel anywhere and then complain or brag about it later. If I could travel I don't believe there would be one place I wouldn't want to experience, at least once.

Just tried the link again since some of you had mentioned the forbidden message and got the same thing. I don't know what's up because it was working fine when I read the article. I even tried doing a search through Google and an on another computer, but same message. Sorry - hopefully it'll come back up soon. Polo's Bastards is a really cool site.
