Great tips, and here's another: the dreamy, laid-back island of Anegada, in the British Virgins, which can't possibly be approached by cruise ship as it's protected by the treacherous 18-mile Horseshoe Reef. This and other cruise-free islands in the Nov/Dec issue of National Geographic Traveler, in the story called "Extreme Caribbean." Sorry it's not online, but we've got kids to feed!
