Stink 0, Airlines 1
A German man removed from a British Airways flight for being too stinky has lost his lawsuit against the airline.
The malodorous passenger sued for costs incurred as the result of missing his connecting flight. The $2,819 settlement he was seeking included the cost of one night in a hotel and the wages lost as a result of he and his wife missing an extra day of work.
A court in Düsseldorf, however, sided with the airline and their very clear policy of refusing transport to those who "have an offensive odor not caused by a disability or illness."
The stinky German's excuse of having to carry three suitcases in 84 degree heat was not considered a disability by the court and the case was tossed out. Interestingly enough, the man never showed up in court, making me wonder if he was concerned that the judge would have taken a whiff and tossed out the case before even hearing any arguments.

It's about time that grammar and spelling errors are corrected. It is not enough to say "get over it" or "get a hobby." Nor should anything be "good enough." If you want to be taken seriously, then you do it correctly, whatever the task is. Misspelling simple words is just ignorance and laziness, and is indicative of the writers character and personality.

Thanks, Shannon I agree with you.
Jennifer Nov 27th 2006 4:53PM
Yeah, Holly, stop commenting on "grammer." (But maybe you could start commenting on spelling?)
Rick Nov 27th 2006 3:56PM
Hey shannon, it's grammar. Not grammer. Chuckle, snort, chuckle.

I am sorry to say, but all of Europe seems to have this odor problem. As an American living here I have realised that it is because one, some don't bathe daily and two,the stores here do not have antiperspirant, only deodorant..which doesn't stop people from sweating to begin with..Help..I've run out of my american antiperspirant and can't find any here in Italy !!!Will I become one of the stinky too???

GOOD for the airlines! There is no excuse for poor personal hygiene in public. This especially holds true for an airplane, where space is at a premium and everyone is in close proximity to everyone else. I really wonder how a guy like that was able to stay married - maybe his wife's olfactory senses are impaired.

Thank you Holly. Those who do not appreciate proper usage clearly demonstrate that they have lower standards than you. To accept anything less than the best rewards mediocrity.

Holly is right. Bad grammar is as offensive as body odor, and a writer should learn proper English or not write. And as for Richie writing "Secondly, every Joe Donut thinks they are a writer because they blog.. "
THAT IS ANOTHER BIT OF BAD GRAMMAR. A plural pronoun is NOT used to refer back to a singular subject.

Vicki, it's spelled 'hobby' not 'hobbie.'

Holly is write. Everyone knows that a gerund is preceded by the genitive (possessive) case. If we let mistakes like that go, who knows what will happen to our language. The resistance you are getting from some folks indicates unresolved sensitivities regarding grammar, perhaps an unhappy relationship with a former English teacher.

Thanks, Holly and Richie, for those grammer corrections. I'm not grammer perfectionist but it is very distracting to read an article with errors, be it spelling or grammatical. Whatever reputation Neil Woodburn would have had as a writer have just floated out the window like a soft summer breeze.

Wow... I thought this was a chance to blog about the stinky man on a flight! Not about Holly and her "perfect grammar"! Yo.. What up Holly? LOL

Travel is difficult enough with crying babies and snoring other offensive body odors eminating from various orofices. Many cultures around the world do not include showering in their daily regimens.I live in Hawaii and plenty of hippies here don't believe in it either! The worst by far is little old lady perfumes put on so thick you can smell them for months on your clothes even though you wash them. Thank God smoking was outlawed long ago. I commend the airlines for having ANY kind of policy for dirty smelly people but they should include overly perfumed passengers as well. Take a bath folks! This is 2006 and soap is plentiful!

I've sat next to many stinkos on planes and I demand a different seat if one is available. There are many people all over who don't bathe everyday and they where soiled clothes to top it off.
Les Nov 27th 2006 4:43PM
The only people commenting negatively on the grammar issue probably don't know the difference between "you're" and "your" and "there" and "their". Learn to spell and write, people.
Aaron Nov 27th 2006 4:05PM
Wow, Holly and Richie really need something to do.
deborah Nov 27th 2006 4:08PM
I am glad offensive smelling people are NOT allowed to get on flights. I would hate to be seated next to a person with bay personal hygine. However, I would hate just as much to be seated next to a person who pontificated about their superior grammar skills. Holly needs to concentrate on the message- not the delivery!
Currie Nov 27th 2006 4:07PM
Hooray for the airlines. As one who flies frequently, I can only applaud their action to remove the stinkpot.
As for Holly anf her grammar police...get a life!
Melanie Nov 27th 2006 4:05PM
(sorry if this comment showed up twice, computer problems)
Thank you to Holly and Richie for being grammatically correct! People think their opinions are so important and must be read by the world, and they can't even take the time to make sure they don't look like morons. And to the people who say "Oh Holly, get a life," aren't you on here adding your own two cents?? Why should anyone care what you wrote? At least she was trying to educate someone. And Shannon, you spelled grammar wrong. Who is the idiot?
