I tried qat (or khat) in Yemen. It tastes really bitter, and seems to draw all the moisture out of your mouth. It had different effects on my and my mates, but for me it was like a mile amphetamine. You get very talkative and mildly hyper for a bit, and then it wears off. In Yemen it is a way of life though, the entire population, from the president down, is hopelessly addicted to it and every afternoon the streets empty as everyone heads home for a chewing session. They even have rooms in their homes (mafraj) purely devoted to chewing.
