Smoke-Free Hotel Rooms
There are few things in life more disgusting than the rancid smell of someone else's cigarette smoke entrenched deep within the curtains, carpets, and bedding of a hotel room. Gag!
No offense to you smokers out there, but your stink remains long after you've checked out. Even non-smoking rooms tend to be similarly soiled; smoke, after all, floats around and settles where it pleases.
That's why I was excited to learn that one hotel chain is doing something about it. Westin Hotels & Resorts have now banned smoking entirely within their establishments. In doing so, they had to throw away all the bedding and drapes -- the lungs of the smoking rooms -- and thoroughly de-stench entire hotels.
I don't know about you, but Westin has now won my business. And now Marriott is following in their footsteps. Thank you!

I am a smoker who agrees with the decision. Some people are very sensitive to smoke and this gives them a options. Hey I smoke now cause I am a adcict. It is so sad. If you don't smoke don't began. When you don't have control of what you want to do and don't want to do it is sad. It could be any temp. or weather outside, but the need for nicotine is too strong. Imagine all the people who probaly got robbed late at night cause they need to go out an get some smokes. Man Pray for me not cause I am stupid or some negative crap like that . Just cause I got hooked. Everybody makes mistakes, but mistakes like these are often times life changing ones. Wow Why are one of the most dangerous addictive drugs on earth legal. The Country can make money off it point blank

I knew Marriott would be one hotel chain to ban smoking. For info purposes only, Marriott is deeply involved in so called LDS( they are neither saints nor the church of Jesus) a mormon owned business. the western worlds equivalent of the taliban. LDS flys and operates under the radar(unlike evangelicles). they had a massive public relations machine with roots in all areas of our society. Their current plan is to buy a large real esate area surrounding their "temple" and annex it. They wish to create a type of vatican city nation state. So know when you stay at marriott you support oppression of womens rights, free speech and child sexual abuse. Just ask Mark Lundsford father of Jessica Lundsfund the originator of the "jessica's Law " movement what happened when he went to Salt Lake to meet with leaders of government and "church" So don't think Marriott is so concerned for your health. They have an agenda

I am a non-smoker. I have no problem with hotels having smoking rooms and non-smoking rooms. the only problem is that there are many smokers who are rude and will smoke even if they are in the non-smoking rooms. I nkow this is a fact, as an ex-b/f was like this--note:an ex. So if this is what they have to do becuase of those who are inconsiderate, then I am all for it. as Pam said, chixe ix power. But if I make the choice to not smoke, I should not be forced to have to still breathe in your smoke. Otherwise my choice is being taken away from me!

Non-smokers... whine whine whine. I am so tired of hearing about it. It's my right to smoke and your right whether you want to stay in a certain room or not. If you don't like the smell of the room, ask for another. Perhaps if these hotels actually cleaned the rooms right, they wouldn't smell. I smoke in my house and it doesn't smell like a smokers room in a hotel does.

what kills me, is the people that "sneak" their cigarettes, and let us smokers take the heat for all the smoking issues, or the one who just have 1 or 2 when they are out drinking... have some balls and take some of the heat like the rest of us

What a bunch of crap!!
I just called a Marriot hotel on Long Island, NY and told them I need to book 5 rooms for the weekend, they said no problem. Then I told them that I would need them all "smoking" rooms and they told me that they would make an exception to their policy. Whats that saying? Money talks, bull____ walks.

I THINK THIS IS A SMART MOVE. I HATE THE SMELL OF SMOKE LINGERING IN THE AIR.IT IS VERY NAUSEA TO NON-SMOKERS. HAVING TO TRAVEL TO AND ENTERING A ROOM THAT REAKS OF SMOKE MY CLOTHES SMELL LIKE IT SO I HAVE TO LEAVE THEM IN THE CAR JUST TO GO OUT IN THE EARLY MORNING TO GET THEM IN ORDER TO GET DRESSED..SMOKE ALL YOU WANT BUT DO IT AWAY FROM THE FRONT LOBBY DOOR AS WELL.I ONLY STAY IN NON-SMOKING HOTELS...AND LOVE IT.

My grandparents, parents, husband and myself all smoked. All raised children in the smoke filled homes. None of the children ever had cancer. Why then do we have children all over the world dying of cancer.
Us smokers are still good and honest people so I think that their feelings should be consider too. Make smoking area's for us. That would answer a lot of problems

I am definitely a senior and have smoked for apx. 50 years. All of us grew up with smokers and went into resturants and hotels and anywhere else without a choice ( smoking or non ) If fact even in Dr. offices. I do not have a problem with people having a choice but WHY take our rights away also?? They have put expensive smoke-eaters and seperate rooms for non-smokers and that still isn't good enough. No take the smokers rights completely away. There is no definite proof that smoking ( second-hand kills )I had open-heart surgery 4 years ago and the surgeon and my cardeoligist came and told me as much as they said they hated to that it had absolutely nothing to do with my smoking !! It was a birth defect that took all those years to get where it did and that I had no heart dammage. Thank God !! I feel that the Non-smokers have gone way to far in taking our rights . I know alot of people my age and younger that will NOT go to a non-smoking etablishment. Talk about discrimanation!!

ME and MY RIGHTS- That is all I ever hear our see anymore. What happen to us & we? Were have we gone as a nation, everyone is so caught up in themselves and what they want that they don't even care about their fellow human beings? Smoker or non-smoker we all live together and yes some people are noncosiderate, and their are many ways that they are but do we hang them by their toes for it? Please give it a rest. People have their falts and we all do so be happy and move on.

Thank you to these to hotel chains! You have earned my loyalty as a customer. I am so sorry that some people feel their rights are being violated. I have had sinus surgery and since have become very sensitive to second hand smoke, it causes me to have migraines. Being pregnant doesn't help that situation right now as the smell makes me want to vomit. Where are my rights to be able to keep my food down and not have a mind numbing headache when I am in public? I know some people have sensitivity to perfumes and I keep mine at a minimum as to not offend anyone. And I am sure none of you smokers would give someone a bouquet of wild flowers if they have allergies. It is called common courtesy for others, not an invasion of rights. Get a grip!
Larry Oct 27th 2006 7:50AM
I have no problem at all with no smoking hotels. I have smoked for over 30 years and will continue to smoke. I do think that these chains should provide a place, outside if neccessary, and away from all other guest, to allow a place to smoke. I would also like to add that I believe there should be a ban on cologne/perfume. Just like the second hand smoke makes some non-smokers ill, perfume and cologne make me seriously ill. I am highly allergic to most manufactured scents and go into a serious respiratory distress. And no, this is not due to my years of smoking. This started in my infancy before I even knew what a cigarette was.

Since when did we become a communistic country!
Well then let's get rid of aerosol cans, trucks, buses & factories. And I am sure these hotels have no chemicals in their cleaning fluids, carpets and curtains. Heck let's just get rid of the polluted air!
I for one will not stay in these hotels! How damn ridiculous. Bad breath, screaming, crying kids and breast feeding in public make me sick! So please ban these as well! Now that would be a benefit to everyone!!
Pegeen Thornton Oct 27th 2006 8:01AM
These hotels have definitely won our future business. It is about time. Smokers should confine their smoking to their own homes. Now if only NC would ban smoking in all restaurants and bars. A dear friend died from second hand smoke(he was a manager at a popular restaurant and bar)and left behind a wife and 2 sons!!I shudder every time I see a car with windows rolled up, children in the back and parent(s) smoking away!

Welcome to the new U.S....S.R. This is why the ex-governor of MN has moved to Canada. We are losing our rights daily. Hey, and I'm a non-smoker.

Before you know it....there will be internment camps for smokers!! This would all be funny if it weren't so pathetically hypocritical. I mean...let's get this straight....you can't smoke in restaurants because those that dine there...are afraid of getting lung cancer or emphysema....by osmosis....and are so concerned for their health and that of their children....that they are overjoyed at the opportunity to breathe smoke free air....while they eat meals that have all the fat content and sodium one would need in a month! This country suffers from obesity supreme....and one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that there will certainly be as many...if not...a hell of a lot more.. heart attacks and strokes from the gluttony of the population at large... than there will from second hand smoke. Then...since everyone is so concerned about dying from smoke inhalation...let's not forget the other part of the population ..some... who are starving themselves to death...so they can all look like our wonderful role models in TV and Movieland....and...of course those that live on drugs...both prescibed and otherwise...or...drink themselves silly on a regular basis....many to the point of no return. If one takes a good look at this whole picture...they will see that smoke odor in a hotel room...is the least of this country's health problems. So...pay attention...because while you're eating yourselve's into oblivion...binging and purging... yo-yo dieting ....having another 1 (or 3) for the road....or telling everyone that you're popping vicoden because of your bad back....bad shoulder...bad.....whatever....you are actually killing yourself by your own volition. If you're obviously bent on doing that....I know some smokers that will be happy to come to your place and 2nd hand smoke you to death. Six of one...half a dozen of the other. Then..too...why not...as is the case with cigarettes... put a big tax on red meat.. anything that's got a label with the words "partially hydrogenated" on it, those frozen pizzas et al....with 1,200 mg of sodium in two slices, and don't forget about that high fructose corn syrup? While you make up a list of the gazillion things out there...that will surely put you in harms way a hell of a lot faster than a stream of smoke coming your way....just remember....I told you so. Don't think this is funny??? You're right....it's a sad testimony to the people who just don't get it...yet hop on the bandwagon for a cause...when their habits are as harmful...if not moreso...than that which they condemn. To end this with a little actual humor...I recall my mother... who lived in a condo building with a large senior population... telling some of the women to stop smoking. I said....mother, they are like eighty five years old...why ...in G-d's name would they stop smoking???? After we had a good laugh over it..we got onto the topic that's truly one of life's mysteries ....and that is...that so much of it has to do with genetics. There are many...many folks out there...who have smoked for 50 or 60 years...and are still kickin'...while others...some who've never smoked at all...die of lung cancer in their 40's. You can eat well...exercise....not smoke...nor ...heaven forbid enter a place where someone has smoked...and ultimately find out that...as much as we'd like to think otherwise....life is a crap shoot.........

My company hosts an annual conference every year and it's always in a Marriot hotel. It will be nice to know that next year I won't have to request a non-smoking room only to still deal with the lingering smell of smoke from somebody who smoked in the room despite it being non-smoking or the smell drifting in from other areas of the hotel.
Devynn Oct 27th 2006 8:09AM
if choice is power, i'm exercising my power to not DIE from your "rights." so if these hotels make it a point to smokers that they can go kill themselves and EVERYONE around them else where, then so be it. at least now i know where i can stay and not have to deal with the smoke smell. woo hoo! :)
Sara Oct 27th 2006 8:17AM
Yes, why don't you smokers stick together. You will probable die together if you aren't so lucky. My Mother just died from complications from lung cancer. She smoked nearly all of my life except the last 20 yrs. My sister-in-law died 10 yrs ago from lung cancer, (second hand smoke)she never smoked. It was horrible watching her grasp for her last breaths her did have. It is horrible to see these smokers standing outside a hospital, and not in the SMOKING SECTION, where they are supposed to be, so that people like my Mother with her oxygen has to walk through the thick smoke to get into a hospital for her medical help. I hate the smoke smell that we have to walk through, and have to put up with around smokers. My husband has always said "Smokers are the rudest people I know". My family has stopped eating at certain restaurants because of smoking and not stayed at certain Motels because of not having Non-smoking rooms. I for one hate being around the rude smoking people.
