Photo of the Day (8/5/06)

Now it is true I have eaten many a questionable dish and species in my lifetime, but looking at this South American plate I'm thinking probably not as much as some folks have. Um, yes. According to Morrissey who left this fine gastronomic shot in our Gadling Flickr pool the meat is delicious. What kind of meat is that you ask? Well it's a Cuy (or guinea pig). If you stare a little harder you can make out a limb or two and yes, that looks like a head there too. Can anyone else see this? Would you sample this while hanging out in Peru? I would.
Stomach growling or turning yet?

I have a friend who ate Cuy once; she said it tasted good. However, I don't like eating anything with its head still attached: I need my food a bit more user-friendly.
The beer and the fried corn bits look good, though.

Well, I had a guinea pig as a pet when I was little. So, nope.
There's a reason why I'd never have a cow, chicken, or fish as a pet. I don't want to eat a cute animal--especially not one I've nurtured.
Which is pretty illustrative of just how far we are removed from our food sources these days. :)

Last year I went back to Peru, to the Cordillera Blanca region. Very beautiful. I lived with a family of ten kids, mom and dad, and they served me guinea pig (cuy) after asking if it would be OK. I said yes, as long as I didn't get introduced to it (I could hear them in the small animal room in the back of the house).
While it looks too much like guinea pig, I have to confess, the meat was sweet and tasty. I don't think I would do it again, but it's good to know that if I had to, I could.
The really really top dish in Peru is lomo saltado, if you can get it made by a top chef. I had my best dish made by a chef at one of those rain forest resorts. Delicious!

Er, I'm Peruvian, but I've lived in the US since I was a toddler, so I've never been introduced to those type of exotic dishes, minus Anticucho which is cow heart (and you'd be surprised how good it tastes barbecued). I have never in my life eaten Guinea Pig, and personally, I never want to! My parents have had if before, but this was in Peru, and it's not often that you find Guinea Pig served in an American restaurant. I am against eating those type of animals. Cow, pig, chicken, turkey, fish...those are normal meats, anything else, no thanks!
And Lomo Saltado is alright, my mom makes it once in a while, but I don't think that's the best food served in Peru. I know that Ceviche is popular there, but I was never a big fan of fish. Um, if you want to try a really good Peruvian dish, try Caldo de Gallina, Anticucho, Papa Rellena, and don't forget, the best soda in the world: INCA KOLA!
