Any car can make the trip. The road is dirt but not so bad. Just make sure you get there early enough to catch the ferry. Our ferry was crammed with cars and I'm sure some didn't get on.
One thing you will miss out on if you rent a car and head up to Valbona after the ferry trip is the hike onwards to Thethi. I missed out on it as well due to the rain, but I've heard it's great. Something to consider...
