Getting kidnapped and held for ransom can put a damper on even the best of vacations. Fortunately adventure traveler Robert Young Pelton has written a few tips on how to avoid such a calamity next time you’re abroad.
Pelton has made a living traveling to dangerous places and surviving and it’s no surprise that he has been kidnapped at least once during this time. The words of wisdom he imparts within his Adventure Magazine, May 2006 column are well worth a few short minutes to read as it could very well save your life (or bank account) one day.
He also talks briefly about Kidnap, Ransom, and Extortion insurance (KRE). It costs about $1000 a year but is immediately canceled if you promote the fact that you have it. Otherwise, you become a guaranteed payoff for any schmuck with an AK-47 and blindfold.
