Photo of the Day (4/29/06)

This latest addition to the Gadling Flickr pool comes from Styggiti who titles the shot "Pi." Taken in Haleakala National Park in Maui, I had to do a double take. Looking at this photo one might think there was a little how do I say, um, tweaking in Photoshop possibly, however it appears the oddly shaped tree may very well be bending au natural. I sat for sometime in question, but I'm pretty such the scene we're seeing is real. If so I'd love to head to the woodsy destination to see it with my own two. If it isn't then I need to get my own two checked out by the eye doc.

Most likely the tree is a Banyon tree. I have a picture on my site of the largest banyon tree in the continental US on my site. Believe it or not that is one tree in the picture. It is located at the Thomas Edison house in Sarasota, FL.

Hey Michael,
Thanks for pointing that out! Sarasota is near my neck of the woods in Tampa. When I get back home in a few months I'll definitely be checking it out.

Glad I could be of help. They are the most amazing trees you will ever see. Pictures do not do them justice.

It is indeed a Banyan tree (no Photoshopping required). This one happens to be along the trail in Haleakala National Park, on the Pipiwai trail that leads to a bamboo forest.
