Rainiest Place on Earth

When most people think of Hawaii, they think of tropical weather and sunny skies.  While this is, for
the most part true, few people are aware that Hawaii is also legendary for the complete opposite: the rainiest spot on
earth.   Mt. Waialeale, located
in the center of Kauai, is lashed with 460-512 inches of rain a year—that’s more than 40 feet folks!

Of course, no one lives at the top of Mt. Waialeale, except perhaps fish.  But people do live in the foothills
nearby where, in January and March of this year, six feet of water has already poured from the skies.

A recent article in The Los Angeles Times, spotlights this region of
the country and what it’s like to live in a continual, outdoor shower… the constant mud, battle against
mold and mildew, and roof gutter maintenance that is non-stop.  The payoff, however, is lush, Jurassic Park-like
foliage unlike anywhere else on this planet.  The rain is a steep price to pay for such beauty, but one that a
small handful of amphibious humans are willing to endure.
