Disney's Everest Ride
After the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and the Haunted Mansion (about which, we blogged recently...to some
controversy), probably my favorite ride at Disneyland is the Matterhorn. The reasons for this have as much to do with
the fun quotient of the ride itself (about a 6.4) as with heart-warming childhood memories of going to Disneyland. You
see, the Matterhorn rises above the valley in Anaheim and is easily spotted from Interstate 5 from miles away.
Therefore, it was always the first thing you saw that let you know you were near the Magic Kingdom. In fact, when I was
a kid going to Disneyland with the family, we'd place bets on who could spot it first. The winner got to punch whomever
he wanted in the arm. Well, now Disney is one-upping itself and creating an all new ride to beat even the Matterhorn. Except this one is in Florida at Disneyworld. Called Expedition Everest, the 200-foot ride will launch in April, and will offer guests the opportunity to "trek" to a Tibetan village as well as to hike a miniature version of the Hillary Step. Of course, trek is in quotes because you know the marketing people are concerned that legions of obese Americans will see the word and react negatively. When they say trek, that is, they mean you will ride in a train.
Now what's interesting about the ride is that the Imagineering folks really went all out to make sure the new ride is authentic. Check out this site detailing the group's trip to Nepal to nail down certain details. Rather impressive. And here is a photo gallery about the ride showing construction and the faux Everest.
So I have to say I’m intrigued. I like the idea of another Disney ride with some substance and a story behind it. The white-knuckle rides of the recent past seem to lack a narrative, so I’m glad to see this ride will have a bit more to it than a looping coaster.

I had the opportunity to ride this last weekend, as they are doing soft openings of it already. It was an amazingly well-done ride. The Yeti sequences are great, the ride and the line area are both great-looking and interesting (although I luckily didn't have to spend much time in the line - thanks Fastpass!), and the thrill-factor of the coaster is second only to the Rock N Roller coaster at MGM (as far as Disney coasters go). This ride is definitely going to drive up attendance at Animal Kingdom.

Great Ride! I rode with my 13yr old & 8yr old thye loved it too. We went on first thing in the morning during the magic hour and rode 5 times in a row. Really the only ride I wanted to do in the park I have been on all hte other rides dozens of times and the past few years. Really worth the wait very exciting!

first and foremost, this is not a superfast coaster. it has its moments, but, after 2 times in teh back row, we never left our seats, and felt it was a nice ride, but no where near the burst, or, upside down thrill of rock and roller coaster at mgm. i love disney, but, it should have been a few mph faster. great story line, however, a very scenic ride, and it towers above the park, animal kingdom needed another ride badly, as the place has only a few and on a slow day, you can finish the park way too soon...hopefully, this park continues too grow and get a few more rides. as far as coasters in florida, i rank this only ahead of the 2 at the magic kingdom, and a few of the busch ones..not as good as hulk, dueling dragons, krakken, montu or sheikra...[ or rock and roller at mgm] but, enjoy, safe for most kids, and enjoy the yeti, he just might get you...

Our family LOVES this ride! My four year old could not get enough of it, but that is not to say it is a "baby" ride. He loves anything fast, and the Yeti was a huge hit! Disney scores big with this one!

We have been to Disney over 40 times with our most recent trip this past week. My family went to Animal Kingdom for the magic hrs. in the am just to ride Everest and we were very disappointed.Rock n roller coaster blows this ride away. Too much hipe for this ride.

Going to Disney next month. Does this ride have large hills (Drops) or is it more like Big Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain? Two kids I will be traveling with do not like large drops but do not mind speed.

My family, with an eight year old daughter, love Expedition Everest. It does have a big drop like Splash Mountain, only it banks at the bottom. You can easily see this drop before you get in line, to gauge whether your kids will like it. Most of the speed is backwards in the dark so it seems faster than it really is, especially to kids.

My family liked expedition everist. It is fast and it is realy dark in the cave.Tere is a 80ft drop in the middle of the ride. When you go in the mouton and come out the trac is broken so you go backwords in the dark.
