Delta to South Africa
A quick bit of news that might be
of interest to folks out there...and I post this partly, too, because a buddy of mine is headed to South Africa,
literally, today. Delta Airlines is proposing a new service from Atlanta to Africa, with routes to Dakar, Senegal, and
Johannesburg, South Africa. They still need approval from the Department of Transportation, but if they get it then
Delta would thus be the only mainstream U.S. carrier with scheduled service between the United States and the African
continent. As someone who as ALWAYS wanted to go to South Africa, I see this as bright news from an industry that has
not had a great deal of bright news lately.Filed under: Arts and Culture, History, Business, Festivals and Events

Yeah, but you can already do this same route on South African Airways from NY, D.C., and Atlanta and it's a whole lot nicer. Better food, better wine, individual TV/movie/game screens, etc. Plus business class has fully reclining seats that turn into spacious beds. Delta is way behind on all of these counts, plus you can earn Delta miles on SAA anyway, so this is kind of redundant. (No Medallion credit for these flights though--and they don't tell you that when booking or on the web site.)

Part of the reason they're doing this is because SAA is moving to the Star Alliance middle of next year, and Delta won't have any more seats to offer on SAA after that. The SAA flights are ok - service is indifferent at best but the planes are good, at least, and lie-flat beds make the 18-hour trip decent.
