Philly: Mutter Museum
I'm recovering from last night's New Year's Eve
Party, watching football and the Mummers parade from my friend's couch in Philly. We took it slow today and did not
venture out to do or see much of anything except to eat leftover party food. I had some time to glance at the news and
came across an article
in today's New York Times about the freaky Mutter Museum in
Philadelphia. No, I did not decide to spend the first day of 2006 browsing displays of skulls and cadavers, but was
suprised to learn that such a place exists in this city and was open today. The Mutter is definitely a weird collection
-- there are organs in formaldehyde and remains of soldiers with bullets lodged in their skulls. Sounds like fun huh?
The museum is part of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and features over 1700 items and specimens of
pathological anatomy. Nature and science buffs may enjoy it, but some will not be able to stomach it. Especially if
nursing a hangover today.

Keeping with my tradition of posting about all things Philly...
The Mutter museum (which people often verbally confuse with Mummer, a big mistake) is an increadibly cool place. While the exhibits are gross, weird and disturbing, they are also in fact quite fascinating. From replicas of the worlds largest and smallest skeletons to a full blown exhibit about Philly's own medical mystery the "soap lady" there is more to see and learn about that you've never heard of or wouldn't have believed than any other museum I've ever visited.
