World Cup: Alternative Lodging

It's not going to be easy to find a place to stay if you are lucky enough to be attending any World Cup soccer matches in Germany this summer. This article in the Guardian mentions two alternative lodging options to consider: Hire a VW Campervan and have your transportation and lodging worked out in an instant two-for-one deal. Or, if luxury boating is more your speed, why not cruise the canals of Berlin in the days leading up to the July 9th final? A third option that will be especially appealing to budget travelers is Host A Fan, a German website that helps connect traveling soccer fans with locals who have extra beds to spare. There is a chance I may be attending a game or two...and this third option look like the one I'll be investigating further if I do snag some tickets. It is the cheapest of the three, and probably comes with a free local tour guide for the duration of your stay. I'm curious to hear about anyone's struggles or successes with finding lodging for the Cup. (And you thought getting tickets would be hard??) Or does anyone have other innovative accommodation ideas to share?
